I'm just amazed by this song. Not really the song itself, just the situation surrounding it.
I remember when it was first leaked early spring of 2005. Not many of us were too fond of it.
In fact, personally i was rather worried. It sounded like shit the first few listens. Didnt like the key it was in, the voice, the lyrics. Nothing.
And that was the first song i heard. I was like, fuck if the entire album is this bad Oasis just dug themselves their last grave. But how wrong i was!
And now, i fuckin love it. I think many of us here do now too. And it's fuckin good live apparently. The guitar solo is ace.
I have nothing really more to say lol. Just want to give props to another ace song from DBTT

I thing Lyla is up there with the bands best work, it completly astounds me that they weren't too bothered about recording it in the first place.
To me this song is like a celebration and was perfect for the stadium gigs. It just sums up oasis to me; a positive, let's ave it attitude celebration. Thats the feeling i got when i went to city of manchester stadium in 2005.
Noel may have talked down this song in the beginning but i think its a really good peice of music. The chords are interesting with the dropped tunning on the b string and capo on the second fret, the drumming is once again spot on by zak, good fills at the end, the guitar solo is really good and the lyrics are positive.
for me Lyla thoroughly deserved its place on the STC best of album

one of the worst oasis songs ever. it's so monotonous that it makes the hindu times sound progressive
if it had been a U2 song it would have been embarrassing to them cos it's over-stadium rock-friendly

Is much better live than on record.
The reason the fans didn't take to it at first (and the reason why the populace at large largely shrugged it off) is that is is, in many respects, the same-old-same-old from Oasis.
Pounding B chord sequence like on The Hindu Times - check Usual nonsense lyrics about nothing much - check Slightly naff guitar solo that isn't a patch on anything Noel did on BHN - check Incerasingly raspy and whiny vocal from Liam as his voice keeps changing - check
(And this last one especially is big; we get used to it as fans but when people haven't heard him sing for awhile and he appears live it is a shock to them. Just think back to the reaction to them performing this song on the Jonathan Ross show and then when they played the Brits last year).
For me it is an okay Oasis song. The Hindu Times was better, though. I was pleased that the rest of DBTT was a bit more experimental, for Oasis at least.

Loved this song from the first time I heard it and love it just as much now. Exactly as you said, it sounds like a celebration. Just exactly what I want from Oasis. EXACTLY. Holds up well and Liam sounds great. On the record it is the most 'old-school sounding' Liam vocal on the record. Great in concert too, a real pogo song as Noel would say.

I like it now, grew up on me.. cause before being released it was compared with roll with it in by noel or someone and i though no fucking way...For me the solo is to way fucking short..
Like I said,,, i like it,, but its probably ...apart from meaning of soul... my least favorite track on the album.

What's most incredible about this song is that it almost did not make the album at all. I recall Noel stating that Lyla was one of those 67 or so songs they overlooked during the recording sessions. From what I understand they had the album songs chosen, but then decided to rework Lyla and add it to the album because it sounded like a proper first single.
Whether you like the song or not it's pretty wild that Lyla would've just disappeared and been forgotten had it not been recorded. This illustrates how much better Oasis is compared to their competition. Other bands could make careers out of scrapped Oasis songs.

better than hindu times for me.. That opening riff in Hindu Times is just so cheesy. Lyla is just a real stomper and i love the effects
