Regardless of what you think of Oasis, regardless of how much their arrogance/unoriginality pissed you off, regardless of how tiresome you felt the Britpop movement was, you cannot, cannot, cannot deny the brilliance of some of these songs. You just can’t. Live Forever, Wonderwall, Supersonic, Don’t Look Back in Anger, Morning Glory, Champagne Supernova, Talk Tonight – these songs are masterful pop rock songs, the likes of which have certainly been written before, but really, when you think about it, haven’t been written since. Think about it. When was the last time you heard a rock song on the radio that had the Instant Classic sound that Don’t Look Back in Anger had? I don’t know, maybe I’m biased because I’m an unabashed Oasis fan, but I feel that’s true. Maybe they haven’t been very relevant here since. Maybe they haven’t done anything too special since. But they were a brilliant pop band for about 2 or 3 years, and they’ve struck gold a couple times in the ensuing 8 years. And this retrospective reflects that, with the exception of Lyla, a pretty boneheaded “Street Fighting Man” rehash, that was inexplicably picked over Stand By Me, a fantastic song from Be Here Now, that was almost certainly overlooked due to Noel’s hatred for said album. I think the thing with Be Here Now is, before that, Noel couldn’t write a song people didn’t love, he couldn’t write a song that didn’t touch people, a song they related to. Then Be Here Now came along and its cockiness turned people off and they began to question Oasis’ infallibility (because, up to that point, in a large number of European eyes, they were infallible). I guess that embarrassed him, and he retreated to more humble songwriting, which has been a hit or miss formula for Oasis. Songs have seemed less effortless and less classic. I’m not sure. It’s just a theory. But Oasis meant Something for a lot of people, and I was one of them. They were so right for the time, so right for the atmosphere, so right for everything. The door was open for a band like them, and they kicked it open anyway. Buy this album if you're not sure about everything I've said. I'm almost positive you'll be one of us afterwards.
Thanks for reading, I'm kinda drunk, and I felt the need to write this, and I thought you were the only people who'd care. Thanks again.
