Rafa Benitez stunner - 'England job might tempt me'
Nov 22 2007 By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo
RAFA Benitez today sensationally refused to commit his future to Liverpool.
In an extraordinary Melwood press conference the Reds boss even allowed himself to be linked with the England manager's job, which was vacated earlier today by Steve McClaren.
The usually affable Benitez was clearly in a bad mood and chose his words carefully throughout the ten minute long press conference.
On several occasions he was asked the kind of questions which he usually answers without even thinking but instead of doing that he chose to brush them off with the same cryptic answer.
When asked about England's performance against Croatia, he responded: "I prefer to concentrate on training and coaching my team."
When asked about the threat Newcastle will pose to Liverpool on Saturday, he answered: "I am focusing on coaching and training my team."
He delivered the very same answer on at least ten more occasions.
One of the few questions Benitez was prepared to answer concerned the national team manager's job.
Asked if he would consider taking over from Steve McClaren if the job was offered to him, he said: "You never know what might happen, maybe."
Just last week, Benitez appeared to commit himself to a long term future with Liverpool when he talked of emulating the 21 years Sir Alex Ferguson has spent at Old Trafford.
But today's comments throw into doubt that previously held ambition and suggest all is far from well at Anfield.
The inference which could be taken from the press conference is that Benitez is not happy with the backing, or a perceived lack of it, he is receiving from the club's American owners.
The Reds boss gave this theory further credence when he admitted to being frustrated with life at Anfield but he would not expand on what he meant by this.
But by refusing to commit his future to the club and allowing himself to be linked with another job it appears he has basically delivered a "Back me or sack me" ultimatum to Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

all i've heard since england failed to qualify is how the whole english set-up needs changed from the ground up - kids playing small sided games, coaching techniques need to change blah blah blah.
honestly, i think thats a load of pish. the current england squad is an embarrassment of riches, fuck i wish we had half the talented players that you lot had.
how mclaren couldnt get england through that group with the squad you have is beyond me. if that had been martin o'neil or mourinho in charge of that squad, you would have walked that group.
we've proved that if you put in a coach that can organise and motivate players, and you can get results. or maybe thats the problem - maybe there are to many big egos in that squad that cant be fucked giving 100% everytime they play for their country, i dunno.
but anyway now that neither of us is going, lets get a game on at wembley next summer! ;D

but anyway now that neither of us is going, lets get a game on at wembley next summer! ;D I saw in The Sun today (Urgh, The Sun. I know) that they are trying to get the home nations tourny on again next summer. Dunno if it'll happen though. Why did they stop it in the first place? Was it the hooligan problem?

Capello it is, then!
Personally I am happy to have him, he is a world-class coach who has won huge honours (compare to McClaren, one League Cup with Boro and a well-deserved hiding in the UEFA Cup final). He is a disciplinarian so hopefully he will sort out some of the prima-donnas in the side and get them back to playing with some pride and passion.
In an ideal world I would agree that the England manager should be English. However all the English alternatives are just not good enough. Even old 'Arry (who was never going to get it anyway, he has the same problem as Allardyce with all these stories of shady deals and brown envelopes full of cash).
Give me a talented foreign coach over an average/poor English one any day. We cannot afford to be too proud - we are shit and have been on the slide for the last 2 years. As said above, it was the "Englishman at all costs" mentality that landed us with that sack of shit McClaren in the first place. He was fucking terrible and no apologists will ever convince the country otherwise. Hopefully a new start with a proven winner will be a kick-start for the side.
