VIENNA (Reuters) - Thousands of Austrian football fans dismayed at their national side's poor showing ahead of co-hosting Euro 2008 are petitioning for their team to be withdrawn from the tournament. A group of fans have collected more than 4,000 names on their Web site (www.rueckgrat.cc) since launching the petition last Wednesday. "This is not about criticising players or coaches," said Michael Kriess, one of the four fans aged between 33 and 40 who launched the petition. "We simply say that the way Austria is playing is an insult to our, to every fan's aesthetic understanding of the game." Earlier this month, Austria extended their winless run to eight by losing 2-0 to Chile in a home game. The team play co-hosts Switzerland in a friendly on October 13. According to the petitioners, displays of skill by coach Josef Hickersberger's squad were as rare as meteors landing on Earth. ADVERTISEMENT "It...means you fall into a dismal state of depression when watching a match featuring the Austrian national football team," they said on the Web site. The petitioners, who blame the team's management for the problems, are selling T-shirts reading: "Initiative for an Austria-free Euro 08 supporter", with the proceeds going towards an Austrian academy for football officials.
