Well, I guess since I am going to be here two more years I should actually learn the sports! Is there a website that outlines everything about Football in the UK - as in the different leagues, I hear all this about Premier league, Champions league, the UEFA, the FA etc? I enjoy watching the games (when they are on anyway...) but I am confused about pretty much everything. Help me out people!
by the way a good explanation of the rules would help too!
It really sux, I was huge into sports back home, coached basketball and our football, I even got certified to ref basketball games, but here it's all new and confusing!

i don't know of a website, but i should be able to answer a fair few of your questions.
in england you have
the premiership the championship league 1 league 2
(stupid names but those are the leagues on order)
the f.a cup (the top knock out cup cometition open to all the teams in the country.)
the league cup (currently called the carling cup) a knock out competition for the teams in the 4 leagues i named, its not as important as the f.a cup and the big teams often feild weeker teams.
Europe
UEFA is the governing body of europe.
the champions leauge is the top european competition it has 8 groups of 4 teams that play each other home and away. the top 2 in each group go through to the second round.
from the second round to the semi finals 2 legged ties are played. the final is a one off game.

so a team can be in the premier leaue and the champions league at the same time i suppose because premier is UK only, correct? Exactly how are the champions decided and which title is most coveted?

Exactly how are the champions decided and which title is most coveted? yes you can be in both the premier league and the champions league. currently 4 teams from england qualify for the champions league (the top 4 in the premiership), however teams 3 & 4 have to play a qualifications round. the premiership is a league where each team playes each other twice once home and once away. you get 3 points for a win 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the season (currently 38 games in the premiership) the champions league is 8 groups of 4 teams were each team plays each other home and away. the top 2 in each group go into round 2 which is a two legged (home & away) knock out. the quaterfinal and semifinals are the same as round 2. however the final is just a single game at a venue decided before the season starts (the season just gone it was athens). the most coveted is the champions league as it means you are the champions of europe, were as the premiership means you are only the champions of england.

There's not a Manchester United fan I know that would have picked the Champions League over the Premiership this year, having gone so long without winning it.

So there is no type of playoff system in the priemiership right? I could see how the champions league woudl be better appreciated, what with the big game and all. We americans love big highly tense playoff series'! On any given day you can win or lose but to win a series of games for the championship imho proves you are the better team.

Not so much. In the Premiership, there are a pre-determined number of European places, which teams qualify for dependant on their final league position.
The playoff system is applicable to leagues below the Premiership. For example, in the Coca-Cola Championship, the top two teams automatically achieve promotion to the Premiership. The next four then play for the remaining place via a knockout tournament. This same system is used, with minor variations, in every league aside from the Premiership.
It'd be the relegation system, more than anything else, that I'd imagine you're not used to, given the nature of North American sport?

I think you mean how teams can rise and fall between the leagues, right? Quite different than at home! and am I reading that right up above by Ross that there is a "championship" league in the UK in addition to the champions league in all of Europe?

The top League in England is THE PREMIERSHIP Below that is THE CHAMPIONSHIP THen below that is LEAGUE 1 Then the bottom league is LEAGUE 2 There are loads of other league below Leaue 2, the first being the FOOTBALL CONFERANCE, these are classed as non-league football. Pre 1993 there was them four leagues, simply named Divison 1, 2, 3 & 4 When the Premier League came in Div 2 became Div 1, Div 3 was Div 2, and Div 4 to Div 3. A few years ago Division 1 changed to the Championship, Div 2 changed to League 1 and Div 3 is now called League 2. All the lower division teams will try work their way up to the premiership where there is much more money and chance to qualify for European competitions. Only a few of the top teams in each country compete in the Champions League

thanks for all the clarification gentlemen!
