Muse just debuted on the Billboard (U.S. charts) at #9 with there new album while Thom Yorke is at #2.
NME reports they 'cracked the U.S.'
I noticed the sales figures and if 'Don't Believe The Truth' came out this week it would have debuted at #4 and all the PRESS would have said the "RETURN OF OASIS".
Nothing against Muse but first week chart sales mean nothing and they are usually based on either a massive single that has gotten a lot of airplay OR the band is coming off a decent prior album. Reason why Be Here Now went in much higher than Morning Glory but sold 4x less.
Anyhoo.

DBTT sold 65,000 first week in U.S. It debuted at #12.
Muse sold 45,000 in first week and debuted at #9.
Nelly Furtado was #4 this week with like 58,000 so DBTT this week would have been #4 instead of #12.
Means nothing really but the press would have said Oasis make top 5 albums in U.S. in big return.
Keane was said to 'crack' U.S. and they have slipped to 46.

this week was the lowest for CD sales since 1994, so they would have been way up there.
As far as Thom Yorke is concerned, I'd rather put a knife through my ear than listen to any of his whiny shite.
I'm surprised about Keane, they fell pretty quick. And their single was getting some decent airplay on Sirius, but I don't know what indication that is of FM radio. Muse I thought would debut a bit higher, now that people are realizing how shite System of a Down is (Lonely Day anyone?) I figured a lot of people would gravitate towards them. Might be a grower.

its the same things with singles though.
i guess the only time it matters is when its clearly a hit album or hit single and sits on top of the charts because its a great single/album - not cos everyone else sucks. and it just sounds nice - 'number one album' i suppose

also, cracking isnt just about albums sales is it? i think its also about the mainstream presence a band has in the US - the magazine covers, radio airplay, appearances on tv
maybe people will be right with Stop The Clocks pulling in the occasional oasis fan and re-establish their 'presence'

I can't really imagine turning on the telly and seeing Oasis, but it's a dream I'll keep alive.

true DBTT had a good oppening with 65,000 first week.
But by the end of 2005 DBTT had only scanned just over 180,000.
which for me was disappointing since LYLA did get a bit airplay. However LTBL got nothing so that was the reason.

LYLA made #108 in the singles chart in america. which was just out side the top100. not bad! BUT they needed a follow up single like let there be love which would have atleast the same amount of spins. then DBTT would have had a longer chart life.

Yer right. First week sales mean very little. Especially, if it quickly drops below the Top 20 after a week, its considered a flop.

I SERIOUSLY doubt if muse is gonna have long time fans here in the states.. here today, gone tomorrow..
coldplay, yeah they "made it" here in the USA,, really a household name now..
oasis is a fans band,, that is more than most other bands can say, anywhere in the world.....

If Let There Be Love's video was released on MTV, it would of been fuckin' incredible. If bands like Coldplay and Keane can get there ballads onto MTV, what's stopping a better band from getting there stuff on it?

I hate to say it but Noel should have followed his instincts with that song. It ain't that great. The production isn't that great and it just doesn't work. My opinion of course, I can't see it being on the radio.
