It was the transformation to beat all transformations over the weekend when Manchester's finest, Oasis performed a new - and very possibly - improved set, to a sell out crowd at Dublin's Marlay Park.

Over 20,000 people flocked to the south Dublin venue to see the band perform for the first time in Ireland in two years.

Long gone however, was the lager lout image and rowdy antics that epitomised the rock group in the 1990's, with a serene frontman Liam Gallagher sipping water from an Evian bottle rather than a pint of beer.

And while the band may have been somewhat subdued it seemed the new toned down Oasis was still proving a hit with the fans.

"Just look at the show they put on, it's much better than anything they used to do and the songs definitely sound better," said Frances Hogan from Rathfarnham.

Saturday's balmy evening saw thousands of fans arrive at the park from early in the afternoon, in ample time to catch Irish support act Mundy and Coral before the main event.

And while much of the start of the show was dedicated to new material, it was the 1990's hits such as 'Morning Glory', 'Champagne Supernova', 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' and 'Live Forever', that drew the loudest applause.

"They were absolutely brilliant," said Wendy Crammond from Kent, England. "It was my first time seeing them in concert and the fact that there's still such a buzz in the crowd for them after all these years is amazing."
