if you feel like replying to this wonderful writer : jay.ditzer@whas11.com What does it say about Oasis that the best songs on their albums are now being written by the new guys? It says a whole lot, actually. It wasn't that long ago that band mastermind Noel Gallagher was cranking out the Beatle pastiches at such a furious rate that Oasis was able to release a whole CD of them (1998's The Masterplan), and even then, they had to leave a few stellar cuts off of that compilation. But things have kind of gone to hell for Gallagher and crew since their mid-90s heyday. Case in point: Don't Believe the Truth, Oasis's sixth album. It opens strong with bass player Andy Bell's "Turn Up the Sun" before Noel's plodding "Mucky Fingers" (pounding rhythm pilfered from the Velvet Underground's "Waiting for the Man") steps in, killing the momentum and serving as a harbinger of what's in store for the listener. First single "Lyla" isn't much better -- this time, Noel swipes from the Stones's "Street Fighting Man" -- and it's all downhill from there. Putting it differently, when guitarist Gem Archer's "A Bell Will Ring" is a high point, well, you're not in the presence of musical greatness. Given the notorious sibling rivalry between Noel and singer Liam Gallagher, hope is unintentionally presented by Liam's "Guess God Thinks I'm Abel." You'd think that maybe Liam had written a tune about his relationship with his brother incorporating a clever Biblical reference, but no: Liam merely can't spell, and nobody bothered to correct the typo. Which just about sums it all up, doesn't it? www.wvec.com/sharedcontent/features/poprock2/062605cccamusicoasis.5564709f.html

Can we ever have a review that doesn't compare every song to someone else's? Or that they ripped it from another band. I'm so sick of that.

Can we ever have a review that doesn't compare every song to someone else's? Or that they ripped it from another band. I'm so sick of that. yeah. its also slightly ironic that they talk about the importance of originality and progress...and yet, especially with DBTT, every single oasis article/review/bio NEVER fails to mention 'it sounds like the velvet underground' (that, and asking about 'do you and liam still hate eachother...ask something else would you?!) at least oasis sound amazing when they use their influences - instead of sounding like an annoying parrot that has banged to death the same irrelevant point - cos we KNOW! and guess what? we dont care! so shut up and tell us somehting new, cos in case you havent noticed, every single other reviewer has said the EXACT SAME THING! the blatant hypocricy is intolerable - they have dragged this point on for the past 12 years, so progress? i think not

I've stopped taking these reviews seriously. It's pointless because I just get annoyed. What's important is how *I* personally feel about the album. Anybody elses opinion (especially music critics) don't mean shite to me.

E-mail I sent off:
First of all I must say you totally missed the mark on your review of Oasis' 6th album 'Don't Believe The Truth'.
As a die hard Oasis fan this reponse sure as hell will be biased but will give some incite. You mention 'Mucky Fingers' as a plodding song.... it is, and I like it. As far as 'Waiting For The Man', it's similiar but not a copy of. When Coldplay sound like the 'Pogues' or 'Kraftwerk' on X&Y which many critics have pointed out, they are 'INSPIRED' by them. Oasis is always 'stealing' although they have never sampled exact sound or written exact lyric (except for 2-3 word homage to the Beatles like 'Fool On The Hill' or 'Helter Skelter' in a song.)
When I heard 'Calling All The Stars to Fall' @ the beginning of 'Lyla' I heard the resemblance to 'Street Fighting Man' and after those 4 seconds it was over. The rest of the album is OASIS. It's such a critics cop out to say 'Oasis' steals. 'oh what about the piano intro to Don't Look Back In Anger.......that's Imagine!" That song doesn't even need that intro and a lot of times in concert it is skipped and it just becomes 'Don't look Back in Anger', a great Oasis song.
They resemble bands from 25-35 years ago when other bands try and sound like their contemporaries to the T (ever hear of Travis for Coldplay?)
Finally, you just we're flat out wrong on 'Guess God Thinks I'm Abel'. Noel did question the spelling in the song (it's on the documentary DVD) and wondered if Liam meant 'Able bodied man' and had spelled it wrong (as you suggest). However, Noel was corrected by Liam and it was ABEL, in the refernce to Cain & Abel from the Bible. Please get facts straight.
As far as this album is concerned, it does not have the huge pop hit like 'Wonderwall' or 'Champagne Supernova' to have it sell millions but it is their strongest cd since Morning Glory.
To let you know I can gladly point out Oasis' worst songs and not so great moments so I am not 'brainwashed'. This album honestly is great and I don't want Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory part 2.
Please give a listen again w/out such pre conceived prejudice.

HOLY SHIT!! I got an almost instant response back from that guy!!!! Tells you he was either right in front of his computer (or that his station/paper really is that small!!). Here's his response! I guess it pays to be nice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kevin,
Thanks for writing. Also, thanks for being civil.
The CD I have did not come with a DVD. I may revise the review.

I blasted him but did not swear or get foul... (pats herself on back)
he wrote this shite back : WTF ? why does he think Noel had been UPSTAGED by others ? has he not listened to POTQ, MF , LTBT or TIOBI ? F *** ! or see the significance of a band that collaberates and feeds off of each other ?
Tam, Believe it or not, I, too am a massive Oasis fan. I used to buy the import singles so I could get the B-sides. However, I was disappointed with the new disc. It's a bummer that Noel is being upstaged by Gem and Andy Bell -- he was the creative mastermind for so long and now he's playing second fiddle to the new guys? I don't dig it. Thanks for writing and also thanks for being civil. sincerely Jay Ditzer

My e-mail to him:
Your review of the new Oasis album was horrible. I really hope to read more of your reviews to see if you are consistantly this bad. You didn't give one respectable critique. Your entire argument was based on songs being influenced by other tunes. That type of comparison could be made for any album or artist. As far as new band members writing songs...that is not a bad thing. Oasis has fresh musicians who happened to write songs worthy of a place on this album. I won't even comment on your slam at Liam's spelling at the end of the review. I think that comment sums up what kind of a reviewer you are, not much of one. -Shaun
His response:
Hi Shaun,
Thanks for reading my reviews. Sorry you disagree. There are plenty more on the way!
-Jay Ditzer.

this is such a bitchy forum, i couldnt care less if a critic didnt like or didnt know anything about the album.... I usually don't care about reviews, but when a guy bases his conclusion and title on pure stupidity ("Liam merely can't spell"? WTF?) I have to send some angry mail. I find it very funny that the only thing reviewers can find against this album (and when it's Oasis they try very hard) is that a couple of songs borrow from older ones.

Wait...Im confused...I read an interview (I believe it was MOJO Magazine) where Liam admits to writing the song FOR Noel and that the A-B-E-L spelling was really just a play on words. So what is the truth eh? Liam can't spell or the Mojo Mag interview?
