By A.D. Amorosi For The Inquirer
Every few years, fans of Oasis' embittered brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher buy tickets to hear which one will rattle the other's cage first. Take those who thronged Penn's Landing's Festival Pier on Saturday for the bill including Aussie-rocking Jet.
The capacity crowd listened for cutting lyrics and braggadocio of the highest order, as when ragged vocalist Liam finished a rousing, tossed-off take of "Morning Glory." "Nice one," he said with self-congratulatory puff. But any sibling discord went unheard.
What could be heard was partly good and partly bad.
The good parts:
Guitarist-songwriter Noel's fresh songs showed a streak of cheer, a pop-timistic philosophy that ran counter to his melancholy melodies. Some of Oasis' best new moments - the shambling "Lyla," the spooky "Turn Up the Sun" - are made of pure bliss.
Lightness rang through the tightly tangled guitars and John Barry-style bridge of "Sun." Big, unadulterated love crept through the countryish background vocals of "Lyla." And Noel's outstanding, Velvet Underground-ish "Mucky Fingers" even included a sense of humor, albeit a bit black.
The bad part: I've spent a long time disliking this band for its attitude. But there's a better reason: listless live performance.
After 11 years of often-bland pastiche and too-tattered singing, the group - no, make that Liam - seems to think that's all its audience deserves.
Liam's dulled scrape through an already turgid "Bring It on Down" and "Love Like a Bomb" made me nauseous. Was this all he had to give? When he promised to "Live Forever" on the torturous, off-key song, it came off as a particularly harsh threat. Though Liam managed to nicely pull off the snake-rattle and sludge of "Cigarettes and Alcohol," his rote vocals drained all the heroic sexuality out of the churning "Champagne Supernova."
Liam's got to take a tip from his brother and have some fun. Between "Mucky Fingers" and the thwacking theatricality of "The Importance of Being Idle," the less-cute brother is the one having all the laughs.
thanx @ Sean

Hmmmm, at MSG and Boston it sure looked like he was having fun... Doesn't this guy realise after all these years that giving the crowd JUST ENOUGH and making them beg is part of Liam's schtick?
Listless performance? Tell that to the 18,000 plus that were frothing at the mouth at MSG or the 20,000 strong that were screaming for more at the Tweeter Center. Nuff said!

Did this guy slag off Liam's vocal? Anyway I hate that motherfucking "attitude" remark! It's what makes them so cool for fuck's sake!! I concur with the "Gas Man " above.... I get sick of ppl "MISSING the boat" with Liam (and Noel !) It has been said that Oasis' shows are embodied by the the music, attitude, the VIBES, the haircuts, the clothes, footballers, hot chicks and the sense of PRIDE true fans have - singing along , joining together - and being MADFERRIT! The music speaks for itself ! They have always said that ! A true fan knows ! if your lame asses wanna sit - go see coldplay ! if you wanna be amused and entertained - go fucking see the Darkness or someone like that ! I grew up in the phila area and went to college with all those C * * * s ! I laughed when I heard Liam and Noel were having FUN with the crowd upfront ! i.e. Liam said reportedly - Look we have 2 fans ! Philly is working class and the lads could take the crap the fans had to dish out ! Liam and Noel were in there element perhaps ! Yeah Mancs throw beer bottles and puke and pee at shows, but they are madferrit ! Philly ppl do the above but ain't ! that's the difference ! thanks for listening to my RANT ! Be well, Tam

Thats right...Send your most tone deaf writer who has "spent a long time disliking this band for its attitude" to review an Oasis concert. Kudos to the publisher.

The worst shite review I have ever seen was from a guy who wrote that the lads should dance on the stage. He didn't like how they just stood still while they played. Fucking motherfucker. I felt so violated when I saw that on print.

F U C K A.D. Amorosi right, a BIG GO **** YOURSELF you twat. Why take the assignment for a band you openly admit to hating? What kind of journo are you you tit? Go work for some rag, oh I forgot... that IS what the Inquirer has become. Too bad those Pulitzers your employers have from their past 'cos with people like you there now they will never rescale those heights. Wanker.

The Inquirer is one of the worst papers around. I am surprised they got the name of the band right. What can you expect from the newspaper group that gave you 40 days of reasons to vote for John Kerry?
Losers, Oasis rocked.
Not the best show I have seen from them, but the venue was partly to blame, and the crowd.

The reviews a fkn joke. Ignore it. You've seen them, you know what they're all about right.
It's rock and fkn roll at its very best, you only had to see Liam swagger to know that.
You know when he's not enjoying himself and I saw him at Penn's Landing and he was fkn lovin' it, without question.
