74. (37) DON'T BELIEVE THE TRUTH (by Oasis) 3 wks, sal: 17,200(-36%)
Total sales to date:109,700
This really sucks. I was hoping for some kind of stability. But it keeps on going down.

The next single has to do well and get air play, this is just the start, it will either crash or burn depending on the next single or singles success. My theory (based on observation) is that an album can only do well if it gets a 'critical mass' when several good singles are released.
When an album is released the die hard fans (like us) will rush out and buy it on faith. For the rest, after one good single, some people will buy the album while others will think that was good and not take much notice.
After another good single more people will buy the album and others will say there are two good singles from that album, I'm interested but not enough to buy the album.
Third good single. More people buy the album and it takes off as they think OK I've heard three good singles so now its worth forking out for the album.
I reckon this applies to even the likes of X&Y, it needs good follow up singles or it will burn out quickly. (take BHN, it fizzeled out quickly)
Then there is the impact of downloading and pirate CD's. Read today that 1 in 3 music cd's are pirated...

Heathen Chemistry sold around 134,000 didn't it? Given time and some promotion plus more gigs and this album may sell more tban that. those numbers are still limp though - time for a new record company over here.

i wouldn't hold too much faith that Oasis breaks 200K in sales w/ this album. There seems to be a declining number of Oasis fans with every album release, and this album may have managed to scrap up more. With the two prior releases, can you blame people for abandoning the band...? I love them, dont' get me wrong, but if I were merely a casual fan, I would have probably thought both SOTSOG and Heathen Chemistry sucked, even though I know it's better than most music out there at the time.

U.S. figures for X&Y are around 800,000 copies sold. And that's in the first week!!!
It's killing everything else out there. I think only The Foo Fighters & Black eyed Peas are giving it any competition.
Shame coz DBTT is a fuckin classic. My mate & I were lsitening to it the other day in complete awe & amazement. We were just gobsmacked at how good it is.
Oasis's poor sales of DBTT basically come down to 2 things: 1/ Complete lack or very dismal promotion & publicity & 2/ They just are'nt "in" at the moment. They've done their 'dash' whilst bands like Coldplay are on the up & up. Coldplay now are in the same 'zone' that Oasis were back in 96' in regards to popularity , sales and being "flavour of the moment".

Well, unless Let There Be Love does phenomenal, which is possible, the album sales will probably top off at about 175-250k.

I dont think it matters what happens on the tour or with the next single... end of story.
I said it a few weeks ago, touring is not going to sell albums, not when you're doing 5 dates here and 10 there... even if the single does well (which it wont because it wont get any plays) people will just download it... take SCYHO which became somewhat popular after it was featured on "The Butterfly Effect" most people just went out and downloaded it...
i bet DBTT has been d/l in the US as many times as it has been purchased...
it's all down to the record company, but with such bad sales I dont know what kind of deal they're gonna get over here... who they sign with will be very very interesting

who really cares how much they sell really anyway? im from england and even tho they sold quite a lot i couldnt really give a shit. I still think of oasis the same way as i always have and i wont change my opinion just because and album sells particulary well or not. not just for oasis but for any album infact.

I would bet the sales went up a bit this week with the concerts in Chicago, NYC, Boston & Philly.
Doing a late show would have helped especially the 'earlier' late shows.
But like others have said. Even critically acclaimed albums wont sell to the masses unless there is a big SINGLE or it is off of prior success (ie BHN or X&Y).
LTBL could capture the 'adult & female audience) but kids aren't going to go after that much.
KTDA probably has the most crossover appeal.
The funny thing is, other than Oasis, none of the bands I listen to even rarely chart. Only thing I am worried about is if Oasis stops touring U.S.
Hit Single. Hit Single, Hit Single........thats it!

Its a shame that they aren't doing live 8. Could have done for oasis what Live Aid did for Queen.
I know this is off topic but here's my rant...
I reckon most of the bands are doing it for the publicity and I can't see it changing anything, just don't get the reasoning behind 'we don't want your money' etc etc At least Live Aid made some sort of sense as people thought they were donating to feed people etc.
BUT it would have given oasis a lot of coverage all the same..

Why is it so important in the US how many records they sell? As long as you like the record who gives a shit how many other people buy it.

its important simply becaue if they're not selling enough records it no longer becomes viable for them to tour here... they could drop to only playing NYC and LA or not playing at all if they arent selling...

DBTT is actually doing quite better than HC in the US, it's a great album so it will probably do even better with the new singles and more importantly, the "real" US tour later this year.

Sales-wise it hasn't been viable to tour the states since about 1998! . They don't need to tour america now. Heathen Chemistry shifted 5 million without doing anything in america, i think they tour the states cos its a good tour.

With the numbers they are drawing here in the states, they should be more than happy with this album release. They don't make any money off the CDs anyway. It's all shows and tshirts and the shows seem to be doing fine off the back of this CD. They may not sell fast and totally out like Coldplay but, there's nothing to sneeze at crowd wise. There is definitely a pent up demand being satisfied at these shows. Most people can't sell out a 3,000 seat lawn ampitheatre let alone a hockey arena anymore. Business-wise I'd say you'll safely see Oasis again stateside.

they sold out 10,000 people in detroit, 10,000 people in chicago, 14,000 in NY, and 20,000 in boston!
Thats about 50,000 tickets sold in only 4 dates! not many bands who are even gold status can sell out MSG!!!
COme on Oasis fans are just smart they download this shit. I bet 500,000 poeple have the oasis CD, or some songs from the new album on burned cd, or there cpu rigyt bow!

That's sad...that's pretty much all the people who bought tickets for this tour...I'm disappointed really, and NOT because it means Oasis aren't the biggest or anything, I'm disappointed cause it reflects the lack of appreciation for music; It might sound shallow, but ultimately, music reflects a certain degree of culture, this only proves people is quite stupid and they're not hungry for knowledge or in this case quality in music. It's sad that image outsells quality...and I'm aware that Oasis was a lot about image, but they always had the quality to sustain it. I hope it's just a phase though...and quality music gets to the top again.
