Il Divo crooned their way back to the top of the Canadian album charts this week, despite some competition from System of a Down and Manchester bad boys Oasis.

It's that Commonwealth thing!!!
Hey question for the Canucks.
I have heard that it is Canadian law that 30% of the music broadcast on Canadian Radio Stations (and I guess Video stations) must be from Canadian artists.
True?

Yeah it is 30% I'm pretty sure. Though trust me its not really "enforced". Truth is there's many channels (especially more pop/hip-hop) oriented stations which don't even come close. Though rock stations usually contain a great deal of Canadian bands, and they're usually popular one's at that, so it's no trouble for them to reach a quota.

I'm Canadian and used to DJ at at a station in Canada. When I was there it was 30% Canadian content. There's a code called MAPL(Music, Lyrics, Production, Lyrics). 2 of those 4 categories must be done by a Canadian. Which is funny because some of our biggest stars like Bryan Adams and Shania Twain don't meet content laws. And yes the CRTC (our FCC) do inforce these laws. Station like Much Music do have special hours that they can bend the rules like concert special and stuff.

oh yeah... on cds from bands like Our Lady Peace has the circle with MAPL on it... plus it's a play on the word "Maple"... Maple Leaf!!!
I know... thought 30%'s kind of low... considering, there's so many great Canadian bands out there...
But, if it means it's at the expense of Oasis songs, I can't complain
