Thursday, June 02, 2005 Gary Graff Special to The Plain Dealer
Ten years ago, when Oasis released its celebrated "What's the Story (Morning Glory)" album, it was hard to imagine a time when guitarist and admitted control freak Noel Gallagher would write only five songs on one of the British group's albums.
But that's just what happened for the new "Don't Believe the Truth" (Epic), which features more contributions than ever by his bandmates -- singer and younger brother Liam Gallagher, guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell.
"It was a relief for me," says the man who first joined Oasis on the condition that he write all the songs, "because it means that I don't have to work so hard. It means I can concentrate on making the good songs better as opposed to Come on, we need six more songs to finish the album, so write something.' It takes the pressure off for me, really."
That said, Gallagher still keeps the bar high for anything that's submitted for consideration. "Oasis doesn't need any more average songs," he explains. "We need great songs; that's what's required. If theirs were [bad], they wouldn't have gotten on the album. They have to be better than mine, and my songs are pretty good, thank you very much.

All hail to the 'Chief.' I think that sharing the writing duties is ultimatley what will make Oasis not only a better band, but a band that will last for years to come. If you get tired of Noel type of songs, you've got Liam, get tired if them both, you've got Andy, and Gem. It's a really special time to be an Oasis fan, it's almost like the band is being reborn.

Letting everybody contribute made the Beatles even better than they were originally and diversified them a bit, and I think that it will do the same for Oasis.

I think it's cool that there are now 4 songwriters in the band as opposed to just Noel, gives the band a much longer future and more window for creativity. It will also push Noel into writing better songs as he himself said - he can make good songs better. I'm sure one example is LTBL.. That being said I still love his songs the most on the new album although the other stuff is far from being average!! I am not really sure which track is the "worst" on the album so thats a good thing. One more thing from a different interview is where Noel said Liam complained that Noel was singing more of his own tunes lately. The Chief's response was: "well if you keep writing your own songs then I'll keep singing mine!". Liam: "so if I stop writing songs then you'll stop singing yours?" Noel: "basically yeah!". HAHA

HAHA I predict that Liam is going to write a song that Noel will sing on the next LP.

QUOTE: "I predict that Liam is going to write a song that Noel will sing on the next LP. " Interesting.. I wouldn't bet against it! As I have said before "Won't Let You Down" is so much more Noel than Liam!! And Liam wrote that...

One more thing from a different interview is where Noel said Liam complained that Noel was singing more of his own tunes lately. HAHA Personally, I think Noel's voice and singing style totally suits songs like POTQ and IOBI, and I'm glad that Liam didn't sing them. I'm not sure about Mucky Fingers though. I like the version on the album, but I'd have to hear it with Liam on vocals to see which sounds better.

The more the better....but Noel still carries the big burden and i think it will be that way till the end of Oasis...
