I love this song, don't know why many people slag it off
have a question with the lyrics though:
you found your god in a paperback you get your history from the union jack
i understand the first line--you believe in what the bible says but its only a paperback book (love those kind of lyrics which make u think!!)
however, what does the second part mean--"history from the union jack"??--yes i know that the union jack is the british flag, i just want to know the significance of that line...
Thanks

hi, I too ADORE Mucky Fingers. (perfect for me - love the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed inspiration so..) Hey, I am still taking it all in as well (the lyrics.) they mean many things to different ppl. "Ya get your history from the unionjack ?" I just assumed Noel was referencing his motherland, expressing his loyalty. I think he has really gone back to his roots this time around. see my thread if ya want - RockNroll star and Part of the Q.. Dunno really. Noel, the man the mystery.. ah... good thread.

Mucky Fingers sounds like what it would be like to hear Dylan lead the Velvet Underground.

im an american, and if someone told me i get my history from the "stars and stripes" i'd be offended, i think Noel was trying to slag close-mindedness, especially because the line follows "you found your God in a paperback"
the flag represents the country, so saying your get your history as told by the country you live in means you can't really think for yourself
as an american, i understand that america exists outside of my own context, and it exists outside of everything i've read in an american history textbook (cuz that textbook was probably written by overly-patriotic americans) just like i know that the meaning of life/religion/spiritualism exists outside a paperback book that overly-religious people declare to be the only truth
noel is trying to say some people don't understand this, i think both lines are meant to be digs at a certain kind of people. maybe that if you're apt to find your God in a paperback, you're also apt to believe that the history your flag projects is all you need to know
thats the way i read it
i swear i have a point with all this i've written, does anyone agree with or at least see what i'm saying?

Hey, YES you ARE right ! I had a closer listen to the MF today. Noel in all his brilliance - he's got his satire going - attacks on human vices thru irony and contempt. he is more witty than ever in this process and even EXHILARATING ! . he upsets the mind with these tunes, but puts it all to such clever melodies.. I see he references phonies, plastic ppl, mistrust, not being told the truth.. trying to stay real and true to himself perhaps.. etc. getting sleepy and ramblin on, good post. ciao
