What The World Is Waiting For Indie Rock 1980-2007 "...What The World Is Waiting For explores how indie ultimately lost its once-cherished intimacy and integrity in front of 250,000 fans at Oasis's Knebworth spectacle in 1996 and how, by returning to its roots in clubs and bars (and even front rooms) with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys, indie became respectable again."
That's how they're going to fuse Oasis into the story, trying to pretend Oasis are indie? How stupid is that? In keeping with the series really, which has been patchy at best unfortunately. Oasis aren't, and never claimed to be, indie and were rebelling against the 'intimacy' long before Knebworth. Noel was talking about the money, the bigs gigs, the cars, the houses etc before Supersonic - if anything they should be in the Stadium Rock episode.
If 'integrity and intimacy' is about a loada shite early 90s groups playing to 5 greasy students in a pub, moaning about how shit their lives are, they can keep it. Oasis made rock fun again, and brought it back to the masses - that should be applauded, not sneered at by the arty-farty types that are ruining this series *cough*Charles Shaar Murray*cough*. No doubt Paul Morley will pop up to have a dig as well.

So true KingofLeon. I don't know why every band seems to be lumped into the indie category. Wouldn't Oasis fit better in alternative or, like you said, stadium rock?

KingofLeon, you are right on. Noel never took part in the whole anti-stardom, woe is me, I hate my father style of songwriting and lifestyle. He wanted to go to the top and be the biggest band in the world. And that is why we are all still here.

No doubt Paul Morley will pop up to have a dig as well. Soooooo fucking right. The wanker critics featured in this programme (CS Murray is a "consultant" on it as well!) are all fucking c*nts. They will look right down their nose at Oasis for being "simple" and the like whilst blowing the Sex Pistols, who were hardly complex.

It's a programme that's been running for a few weeks in Britain at the moment. The Oasis one hasn't been aired yet. Possibly next week or the week after. Looks really good tho'.

For those overseas who can't see it - sorry, don't have the tools to rip it and stick it on youtube but here's the transcript:
NOEL: It was too quick after Morning Glory. There was no kind of time to sit down and think, 'Right, what are we going to do next?' We were given as much... unlimited studio time, wherever we wanted. 'Can I have a 40-piece orchestra?' 'Have a hundred.' Fucking hell, why not? Alright, I'll have a hundred. Great! It's like when you give the lunatics the keys to the fucking drug cupboard in the asylum. At the time we all thought it was the greatest fucking thing that had ever been committed to tape. But we were all on drugs.
(Clip of Do You Know What I Mean?)
NOEL: It's eight-and-a-half minutes long. (Turns to imaginary record executive) 'This is going to be the first single.' The drums haven't come in for two minutes. It's all feedback. I was fully expecting someone to say, 'We'll have to do an edit of that.'
BONEHEAD (interviewed in different location): Yeah, there were some long ones. We didn't rehearse it, we'd been on the road constantly. We were given a CD each and it was like, learn your notes and we'll get in and play it.
NOEL: And proper straightheads would go, 'Fuck me!' And you'd go, 'It must be amazing. It must be fucking brilliant. I'm off me fucking tits and it must be great because he's not and he's saying it's great. Fucking hell man. Let's crack the whip, let's go.' We went on this ridiculous tour with this ridiculous stage set. (To interviewer) Did you go to any of those gigs? Can I explain this to you? We came out of a big fucking 12-foot red phone box every night...
BONEHEAD: It was sort of a replica of the album cover. And every night we'd be going on in the dark trying to find our way to this phone box...
NOEL: This is fucking true. And there used to be this tune going on and it would be pitch black and we'd all be stood there. All five of us. Just going... (taps foot). Because the novelty had worn off after the first night. You know, Liam pretending to fart and all that fucking shit. After about a year of that it was just pure silence until this guy would open the door and there'd be 50,000 people there. Just absolute nuts man. But it was the best tour we ever went on.
BONEHEAD: There was the Rolls Royce, the phone box, the giant clock with the hands going backwards and you know, you'd have to go out there and play your guitar and you'd think, 'Fucking hell!' (laughs) 'What the fuck am I doing here?' You were waiting for John Cleese to do the funny walk across the stage. In the early days we didn't have the money. We were really on a tight rein. We ran a tight ship as it were. If we could drive home from a concert rather than stay at a bed and breakfast we'd drive home to cut money. So by that stage, and in the space of a couple of years, all of a sudden we had money for a giant stage set consisting of half a Rolls Royce and giant phone boxes. And we had money for brass sections and string sections, harmonica players and keyboard players, massive lighting rigs... Of course, we were sort of up there then weren't we? We were selling millions of records.
NOEL: That's how mad it had got. And nobody stopped us. Fucking brilliant! (laughs)

I clicked "watch the whole video" and got a video that had no sound come up with WMP. I'm in the states.
To view the video, do this. You have to have firefox. If you don't have it already, get it, and never use IE again.
Click the "Watch the Whole video link" select WMP.
Right click, and go to view page info. Go to the media tab. Save the ".asx" file. Open it with winamp and you should be good.

Well to be fair that was probably the best episode of the series. They actually filled it with people who were there and are passionate about the era they were talking about, instead of arties trying to over-intellectualise it. Although reducing one of the best bands of the 90s, Pulp, to literally a second of air-time, and not even mentioning bands like Supergrass and Bluetones was a bit annoying.
I especially liked Alex James saying, in reference to Wonderwall, "I wish i'd wrote that". ;D Well yeah Alex, in the same way that I wish I'd painted the Mona Lisa, and I'm shit at art - work it out.
