Bloc Party frontman lashes out at Oasis
Rock band Oasis have "made stupidity hip", according to one of their rivals.
Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke hit back after Noel Gallagher dismissed them as "a band off University Challenge".
Okereke told Uncut magazine: "I think Oasis are the most over-rated and pernicious band of all time. They had a totally negative and dangerous impact upon the state of British music. "They have made stupidity hip. They claim to be inspired by the Beatles but, and this so saddens me, they have failed to grasp that the Beatles were about constant change and evolution. Oasis are repetitive Luddites."
Okereke, the son of a molecular biologist, studied English literature at King`s College, London.
Gallagher left school with no qualifications and claimed in 2005 to be reading a book for the first time in his life: Angels And Demons by Dan Brown.
Asked about Gallagher`s "University Challenge" remark, Okereke said: "Well, it`s quite funny. It probably would have been a lot more funny had he not used exactly the same words to describe Travis a couple of years ago.
"Having said that, it`s probably a very sad indication of the state of his mind.
"Why is it bad to better yourself? It`s all about the weird way in which this country chooses to view the working classes.
"It is really daft to reinforce the idea that there is something cool about being dumb.
"The idea that your ambitions shouldn`t extend beyond getting pissed and watching the football really irks me.
"It`s this idea that to be authentically working class you need to be untainted by the airy-fairy ephemera of education. And it seems to be pretty unique to this country."
Okereke finds the situation so depressing that he plans to quit the country.
"When Bloc Party is done I am definitely going to move," he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, to be published on Friday, Okereke gave his views on drug-taking.
He said it was "hypocritical" for the press to be shocked by the pictures of supermodel Kate Moss allegedly snorting cocaine.
"Can there be anyone out there who has never had a line? Everyone I know has done it," he said.
"Cocaine can be very attractive, very seductive. But for me it`s bad news because that drug can really damage your voice. The drug I do enjoy taking is ecstasy, which gives a real sense of euphoria."

I'm all for bands who give as good as they get and Noel can take it he dishes it out enough, but there argument is mute on the basis that oasis are one of the most succesfull british bands ever and well bloc party are shit.

Pretty funny. I think before he starts slagging off Oasis he should stop and take a look at his own band. I mean, Bloc Party is a band that was opening for PANIC AT THE DISCO in the U.S. while Oasis were headlining their own U.S. tour.

Noel has said in the past that being working class isn't some badge of honour... It just happens to be true. the stupidest thing ive heard in fuckin ages Especially since there is a huge wave of bands who cite Oasis as their influence. I mean I think Bloc Party are an ok band but this is just ridiculous...

hey, they're just playing the game. they're dissing people so that the public will buy their records. it's what our boys did. just a bit of taste of our own medicine. but the big difference is that they have nothing to back it up.

admiring and loving the beatles doesn't mean you need to follow their musical path. they have always had a back to the basics approach to rock. that's their style, idiot.
noel isn't dumb. he has a laugh

Noel has more talent in his little finger than anyone from Bloc Party.Sheer jealousy, can anyone see Bloc Party selling out arenas 10+ years after they started like oasis have and continue to do so? very very doubtful anyone will remember their name by that time. I am sure Noel will dish out some more back when he reads this latest bunch of losers slagging him off, its always funny when he has his little arguments

He thinks oasis had a negative impact on the britsih music scene. When his band has probably sold more records because of oasis.

I really like Bloc Party. I think their new album is really great. However, Kele needs to better understand Oasis and their "message". The joke is on him. Noel is just having a laugh when they put on the sort of arrogant tone. If anyone doesn't already know, it's all for show. Sure, Noel heralds his working class heritage but not being stupid. He's very articulate, well-read, and knowledgable. Listen to him talk about politics or history. The wild, rash, lairy Oasis is just part of the show. Showbiz and reality are two different things. Professional wrestling is fake as far as I know as well... That being said, I can't really speak for Liam's off-Oasis antics. He really is a sort of monkey.
