Found this on a Google search. From the student paper at Washington University in St. Louis: www.studlife.com/news/2005/04/15/Cadenza/The-Flipside.Of.Pop.Culture-926372.shtmlOasis... they're back. Deal with it. Once upon a time-some nine or so years ago-the hearts of many an American were won over by five Mancunian lads who thought they were the Beatles and played appropriately sweeping, often romantic rock epics, all as they bickered with hilarious, brotherly passion and horned enough coke to powder the Barnes maternity ward. Then, with nary a peep, they dropped from the Stateside charts and released two albums no one gave a good God damn about. Oh, they had a little bump of notice when one of their instrumentals ("Fuckin' in the Bushes") was featured in "Snatch," and their "Wonderwall" found a massive, "O.C."-inspired new following thanks to Ryan Adams' cover, but for the most part, we forgot all about the Brothers Gallagher and their po-faced backup band. Brace yourself, though. I say this with complete conviction and total pride: Oasis are back. Yeah, I said it. Get on board. With a new album-the preposterously titled "Don't Believe the Truth"-on the way, the British (now) foursome have released a righteous new single, "Lyla," to which all of my favorite rock adjectives apply: stomping, rollicking and 100% indelible. (Listen to it at I can't believe they pulled it off-I'm an old-school Oasis fan, tolerant of even their most miserable material, and man, have they been cranking out their share of late-but I'm not about to question the how or why. Ignorant listeners always slag on Oasis, but they earned their fame by producing some good-ass songs, at least one of which I'm sure you have a thing for. "Wonderwall." "Don't Look Back In Anger." "Cigarettes and Alcohol." "Supersonic." Even "Heathen Chemistry," their adorably forgettable last LP, included two songs ("She Is Love" and "Stop Crying Your Heart Out") that, in a just, wise world, would have been unavoidable within days of their release. Yes, they're shameless in ripping, ripping, RIPPING off any number of other artists (Noel Gallagher, always good for a ridiculous quote, described the new single unironically as "the soundtrack of our lives doing The Who on Skol in a psychedelic city in the sky (or something!)"), but ripping off artists is fairly common; it's making something good out of what you steal that counts. Now, I'm not gonna jack my hopes up too high yet. The first single off "Chemistry" was pretty solid, and by not knowing what the hell it was, you can figure out how well that turned out. Also, more than half the upcoming album is written by non-Noel members of the band-including the dude named "Gem" who joined the band after the original guitarist got kicked out, or quit, or something. This is never a good sign, especially when the lead singer writes songs called "Love Like A Bomb." But I'm gonna go ahead and have faith. Oasis are one of my favorite bands when it comes to straight-up, windows-down accessible pop, and I'd very much like it if they dropped an LP I'd be unashamed-even proud-to annoy my roommates with. I know of only two other unabashed Oasis fans to speak of-my boy Ryan Adams and Wash U's own film chair, Jeff Smith-but I'm hoping in my rock-star gut that "Lyla" is just the beginning and there'll be plenty more people picking up "Don't Believe The Truth" when it streets at the end of May. If not, well ... "(What's The Story?) Morning Glory" still rules.
