There is no school or 'training' for this. It's all personal. Yes, there is journalism training so that they can put their opinions into clever, semi-intellectual paragraphs. Yes, and someone needs to be able to listen to a lot of music so that they can make comparisons, but at 35 years old(and I believe a person with good rock 'n roll taste and open mindness),I am not going to listen to a 26 year old wannabe beat nik from the East Village tell me what's good and what's not.
I hate Rolling Stones reviews. I never read them. If you take an example of 100 cd reviews, 85 % will fall in the 3-4 star out of 5 range.
Hell Maxim magazine has better reviews of cd's. Some of the English press isn't much better. Gave MG a 7 and BHN an 8 (NME).
I am waiting for a respected NON major magazine review from someone that is NOT a die hard Oasis fan.
I would love to hear a review from a source that is say an Entertainment TV show or something that is not entirely Music. Then there are no on purpose praise or slagging to fill an agenda.
Phew I'm tired.

Yeah.
I did read your review on 'Queue' and I do believe your opinion but like i said, i think (AND ESPECIALLY WITH OASIS B/C OF LIAM AND NOELS ANTICS AND BOASTS) most reviews by fans (mostly positive) and certain music mags (negative....read my all in caps sentence) just don't give me real insight.
I remember reading on INET before SOTSOG that someone had heard 'Sunday Morning Call' and that it was one of Noel's all time greats.
May 31 will never be here. However, what a b-day present that will be....hence my name. Noel will be 38 and me 36! Two days later....NEW ALBUM!!!!
I need sleep!

lads mags give pretty honest reviews... I'd take them the most seriously

The lads mags really do have great, objective reviews. They are not overly detailed or trying to impress the audience with how much they know about music or pissed off that a band wouldn't let them interview 'em. They are usually pretty damn objective. Blender has some good reviews.

The reviews I hate most are the ones that are just full of name dropping. I hate when they try to look smart by making a bunch of connections that don't really exist to bands and songs they figure most people haven't heard of.
