Drummers roll in pop school TOP Manchester musicians will be drumming up support for the city's first School of Pop when it opens its doors next week. Ex-Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll, who played on the band's debut album Definitely Maybe, is the first star to throw his weight behind the project. Tony, who left Oasis in 1995 after a disagreement with brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, will open the Heald Green School on April 16 and talk to potential students about his time at the top. As reported in the M.E.N. last month, aspiring musicians at the colleges will learn to play using a unique method that abandons the rules of music theory. Students will also take part in a jamming session at the end of each lesson to encourage them to use their new skills. Out of the bedroom Speaking about the academy, Tony said: "It's brilliant that young people can get together and play music for fun and have a good time while doing it. Playing live with other people is what it is all about, getting out of the bedroom and being in a band." Pop school owner, Ged Graham, said he very much welcomes the approval of Manchester's local heroes. He has known Tony since the early days of Oasis, when the band was known as Rain, and said the rock star has offered his full backing to the launch. "Tony shares some of my ideas and he was very happy to get involved. He will be officially opening the first school and will be talking to the kids about his time in the music industry. "It's really good to get stars on board, and I've already got a few more friends in the industry lined up to help." Whilst Ged is busy getting big-name backing, Tony has been doing his bit as well. He has roped in ex-Verve drummer Pete Salisbury, who now owns his own music shop in Stockport, for the opening day. Ged is opening two schools in Heald Green and Cheadle Hulme on Saturday 16th, and he is so confident about the potential for the Clive's Easylearn Pop Music Schools that he has bought licences to open several more across Greater Manchester. Talking about the methodology behind the teaching, Ged said: "We've done away with boring theory and made music-making simple, fun and direct. "There's absolutely nothing else like it - we thought it would be great to help children and teenagers play an instrument and get bands together. "Above all, though, it's about having fun!" Hopefuls wishing to sign up for the school or book a free taster session should visit www.clivesmusic.com for details.

It's just the cool thing to slag off Tony, and unless you're a drummer yourself or something like that I don't see why people dislike him, whether the Gallaghers do or not . . . or lack thereof nowadays! Why, do you have interesting pictures to show us? I don't live in the UK or anything so I haven't seen any new photos of him. Kind of afraid to be asking, though . . .

I've only watched it once and because I'm a yank it's hard for me to keep up with the accents so I probably just didn't recognize him. I'll have to see it again, I didn't think he'd be on there.

Tony looked quite rough on the DM dvd. lol, yeah he did a bit. Tonys drumming gets slaughtered, heard so many people saying he couldnt keep time but if you listen to any of the bootlegs from 94 / 95 he sounds ok to me. OK he wasnt the best drummer in the world, but surely hes not as bad as some people make out.

I don't think his drumming would have fit with the songs from Morning Glory. Essentially that is why he was sacked.

I met Tony in a bar here in Tampa, Florida back in '95.
He had just 'left' Oasis and was dating an American girl who lived in LA but was here visiting her family and I knew her brothers friend.
Yes I know, very 6 degrees of Tony McCarroll.
He had very short hair (not the curls he had on DM cover) and I chatted w/ him (he said he quit....whatever)
The radio stations at the time here in Tampa NEVER played Oasis bar 'Live Forever' as MG hadn't been released yet. However, a radio station (and they did this often) would be doing there ID call and what would be coming up next and what festivals were going on that weekend etc. and they would do this over the drum intro of 'Supersonic' but just when you thought that they would shut up and play the song, it stopped and went into some crap song or commercial.
I mentioned that and he said YEAH he heard it and was like THAT"S ME playing drums on 'SUPERSONIC' on Tampa radio...............then of course to then have it go to a car commercial.
We both laughed and winced at the tease and I knew then that it was definitely (no pun) Tony.
Made a mental image in my head of his face then when I was home (albeit drunk) I looked hard at the pics inside DM cover and was like...yep that was him!!
