So how long should the rock star term of office last? Naturally, Ofcom would wish to decide that through a content board, probably headed by Paul Gambaccini. There are signs that creative output begins to decline after five golden years.
Oasis brought attitude, energy and power to the charts in 1994. But by 1999 they were burnt out, retreading past glories. Noel Gallagher scrapped their last album because even he recognised that it served no useful purpose. The Beatles embarked on a magical mystery tour from northern folk to full-blown psychedelia, but they may well have damaged their legacy if they had not dissolved after seven years.

Like Ranger, I hold out hope. There have been some good songs on the last two albums but overall the quality has diminished.
History has shown that apart from a very few examples (Neil Young, U2(?)) bands seem to really tally off after their first five to seven years.
Stones 66-73 Who 65-71 Dylan 62-68 VU 67-70 Sly 66-72 etc etc

This guy is talkin' shite tales.
Oasis isn't like the Stones or the Beatles. Well okay, there where some legandary bands split ups after a number of years, but I think Oasis like it is now, is stronger then the've ever been. Oasis didn't play with the same band members the last 10 years. That might be the thing why the Beatles did split. After some years and glory, the Beatles became a band with different caracters as bandmembers, while in the early days they where solid like stone.
Oasis had a reborn in 2000 with SOTSOG. The stopped doin' drugs (at least as much as they used to use) and reformed the band dramaticly. So in that point of view, the new Oasis has just made two albums (SOTSOG and HC) . I think Oasis is still a band which has the power to get some more glory. Oasis is a band which could be placed into the list of U2, Aerosmith, RHCP etc. They're all these longlife bands, and Oasis could easily be one of those (they might actually already are). Heathen Chemistry wasn't really the glorious follow-up of SOTSOG. Not even a rip off. But it doesn't mean Oasis has burnt out. Even the Beatles did some shite albums at the time. Oasis will Live Forever !
cheers lads !

while i dont think OASIS are burnt out i do agree that a bands most productive years are 5 to 7or8 just about all the bands fall into that group look at the beatles MACCA was not exactly writing as brilliant with WINGS but he did write some good tunes with them. i think the same is true with noel he will always write some brilliant tunes just probably not as many on one lp like the first 2

the thing is: the first cds, all the tracks are classics and have great impact, while the last ones, still have classics, but not all of them are. all bands start to deteriorate after 6 or 7 years, and oasis is no exception, but they are still strong musically.
and for the one who said oasis in next to rhcp, u2 and aerosmith, bands i luv (except for u2..), i think they are actually better, much better.

On the contrary about Rolling Stones I must admit that I like their first 10 or 15 years... Most notably 1964-1978, even som songs 1981'st Tattoo You... But the best albums surely are Sticky Fingers, Between the Buttons, Let it Bleed and Exile on a Main Street.
Wll, I must say that I'm fan of R.E.M.'s about... hmmm... maybe 10 or 13 years - untill New Adventures In Hi-Fi. I like U2 till Achtung Baby, which is about... 10 years, isn't it... So, yeah really the bands aren't as good as their earlier years.
About Radiohead and Oasis - I like all their albums and how they've developped in the years. Radiohead for me is one of the best bands and my personal favourite. Their most experimental work is their best one. Every Oasis album has some difference from their previous one and I like all of them.
