Hi,
I am doing a media project on Britpop and its affects on youth culture, focusing on the 'main players' of the scene and era. Part of my project involes collecting primary research, so would really appreciate if any of you could answer some these questions!
Thanks for any replies!
-Pete
1) How would you define Britpop? (Musically, or culturally)
2) Who, in your opinion, were the main players in the Britpop scene?
3) Did Britpop help or hinder the country by being associated with Tony Blair and New Labour?
4) Did New Labour help or hinder Britpop by being associated with Oasis etc.?
5) Any other opinions or views on Britpop and its affect on culture, particulaly that of the youth?

Well well, i think im qualified to answer on this having played a large part in the events! LoL but seriously get your ass in gear and buy this book on britpop - its answers all your questions and more... 'The Last Party' by John Harris. Oh and look into the only piece of Britpop legislation passed in 1997 - the new deal for musicians. That guy from 'Menswear' was the first to sign up. You will also want to look at Euro '96 and how this fed very nicely into the whole cool Britannia and Britpop thing.. 3 Lions on a shirt etc.. how do i know all of this? im doing it for my dissertation at University!

1) How would you define Britpop? (Musically, or culturally) An era where British musicians came to the fore, and proper bands like Oasis took over a British music scene dominated for too long by dance and grunge by bringing back a genre of music people believed was long dead for a new generation.
2) Who, in your opinion, were the main players in the Britpop scene? Noel and Liam Gallagher, especially Liam who brought out the whole lad culture of the 90's. Also I suppose Damon Albarn must be mentioned and some none musicians aswell such as comedians and sportsmen of the era were involved in the lad culture but none spring to mind.
3) Did Britpop help or hinder the country by being associated with Tony Blair and New Labour? Neither, Tony Blair being seen with Noel gained publicity but did nothing to the country.
4) Did New Labour help or hinder Britpop by being associated with Oasis etc.? I think Britpop died around Be Here Now, not because of the quality of the album but because of the changing on the times. Noel going to see Blair was perhaps the final nail in the britpop coffin...
5) Any other opinions or views on Britpop and its affect on culture, particulaly that of the youth? It perhaps brought across some negative aspects, with Liam's at times appauling behaviour being seen as acceptable by youngsters and with britpop also came an increase in drinking and 'laddish' behaviour, although the britpop era was far more dignified than the era of rap and metal we seem to be in at the moment. Albums like Definitley Maybe encouraged children and teenagers to learn the guitair and make groups as Noel and Liam making it big proved anything was possible as long as you had the attitude, ambition and obviously the ability!
---
Hope my answers can be in some way helpful, answered without much thought which is probably a good thing for this type of survey as it gives a better view of an opinion I reckon...
