......Republic of Loose's debut is an astonishing work of wit and soul, blurring musical boundaries in a distinctly 21st-century fashion, and I believe its sheer individuality will force it to wider attention.
Confirmation that this does not just represent some peculiar aberration of McCormick family taste came for me when I met Oasis over the festive season and started raving about the record to Noel Gallagher. "Not you as well!" responded Noel, incredulously.
It turned out that Oasis manager Marcus Russell has also been enthusing about the Republic of Loose, asserting that they are the most exciting new band he has seen since, well, guess who. "They're like Sly and the Family Stone meets Happy Mondays," was Russell's summation, which is as good as anything I can come up with. Remember where you read it first. (I love writing that sentence).
Oasis go into the studio this month. Being one of the few critics not to have written them off as a creative force, I was heartened by Noel's enthusiasm for the new venture, which unites them with Death in Vegas, the maverick psychedelic-dance-rock production team who previously collaborated with Liam on the majestic single Scorpio is Rising. It's a collaboration that could push the Oasis sound into another realm, marrying their songwriting nous and unparalleled rock sensibility with the dark inventiveness of Richard Fearless's sonic imagination.
