i use X Video Converter. lets you convert to avi, mpg, wmv or even extract the audio. its also free

or if you wanna g straight onto dvd (no editing) , then you can use vsoDivxToDVD, to get yourself the necessary dvd files and correct formats for your part of the world, then you could use dvd shrink to "shrink" the vob file onto a 4.7gb disk. again all free

Then you can use nero to recode it so that it will fit on a single layer dvdr.
