Rawness? I wouldn't say that, but it is one of the greatest albums of all time.

I remember I bought this when I was like 15 or something...and it bored the shit out of me!! Mainly coz the only Beach Boys album I had was the ''20 greatest hits'' or something...I was expecting something like that I guess, a bunch of happy pop tunes..
Then, a few years later I picked Pet Sounds up again and loved it!

it's as far from being raw as can be. it's one of my absolute favorite albums. there isn't one bad song on that record.

i saw Brian Wilson perform 3 times over the last 5 years. His mental condition is absolutely worse, but his singin is quite well and 'Smile'is a masterpiece! any other opinions about smile?

Pet Sounds is a f'n amazing album. First few listens actually brought tears to my eyes. I can understand why the original poster referred to this as raw. The emotion Wilson has in his voice in every song is so unbelievable, you have to have a heart of ice to not feel moved. It goes beyond being a simple album. It is a true work of art.
As for Smile, I think the Beach Boys missed the boat BIG TIME on that. Had they accepted that surf music had passed for the time and adapted to the times, they could've honestly put out the American equivelant to Sgt. Pepper. The album is good but would've been much better with Wilson's younger voice and that harmony only the Beach Boys can make together.
