Singer explains reasons behind tour cancellation Cat Power has revealed that she had suicidal thoughts stemming from her alcoholism.
The singer cancelled her US and UK shows to support her album 'The Greatest' in July at the last minute.
The official statement said the cancellations were for "health reasons". However Cat Power - real name Chan Marshall - has now admitted that she was suffering from suicidal thoughts at the time.
She said: "I was looking at death. I wanted to die...I asked God, I said, 'I'm tired, I can't do this'. I was asking him to just take me."
The singer told The New York Times that she received psychiatric treatment for her condition.
Marshall, who is known for her erratic live shows, said it was her non-stop touring in 1998 that led her into the chronic substance abuse that continued for years.
She said: "Even playing all my shows I was always intoxicated, always kind of not there, which led to the depression..It was more about the uncomfortableness with just being in my own skin, and that's why the alcohol was always with me."
The newly sober singer has already completed her next album, tentatively called 'Sun', and is planning a follow-up to 2000's The Covers Record', with versions of songs by James Brown and Billie Holiday set for inclusion.
Cat Power returns to the UK in November to play the Roundhouse in London on November 1.

I have 'You Are Free'
Some good songs on there. never thought she would be alcoholic.
I don't understand how life sucks w/ musicians. I have to sit in a cubicle everyday for 9 hours. Get over it.

no cat power fans then? Here, Ross! I love her version of "Wonderwall". Just listened to her KCRW studio session a couple of days ago. It's very good. PS: you're going to see Delays again? Lucky boy, I'm kinda jealous! Have a great time.

You, lucky lucky boy! Anyway, it's great to hear they're supporting Embrace. I'll never understand why Radio 1 hates Delays. Such a great band, brilliant songs, Greg's golden voice, but underrated in their own country...really shame. What's Jo Whiley doing?!

Cat Power appears in MoMa project
Chan Marshall's daily life documented for art Cat Power is currently appearing as a subject in a giant movie project taking place in New York City until mid-February.
Artist Doug Aiken filmed the star, real name Chan Marshall, and a host of other New Yorkers for 'Sleepwalkers', a movie showing five characters going about their daily tasks in the city including showering, commuting and performing.
The movie is currently being screened nightly at the exterior of the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, via a 30 feet tall projection. Eight continuous sequences of film scenes will be projected onto six facades.
The project was filmed in the five boroughs of the city, and features Donald Sutherland, Tilda Swinton, Seu Jorge as well as Marshall.
It will be shown daily from 5pm to 10pm until February 12.
Meanwhile, Cat Power picked up a nomination for this year's BRIT Awards. You can see the full nominations list on NME.COM now.

She's an amazing woman.

anyone have any news on a new album, i thought she was set to have one out this year. I last read something in the Rolling Stone that we might not get new material till summer of 2012 because she is a mom now or something like that. Chan is probably my favorite female singer and I'm dying to see her live.
