Hi, I know that the beach boys are known for their gem "Pet Sounds" but, In my opinion their peak is on albums like Surf's up, Sunflower and Holland, those have a fantastic collection of great tunes like Sail on Sailor, Till I die, Flew flow, by the wat after hearin Gas Panic, I think that the las part was inspired after noel's hearin Flew flow, i really think so. Check those albums, they are fantastic, and I think that the best armonies in rock and roll are these beach boys and then the beatles, really peace out!

please find me the quote where noel states that he doesn't like the beachboys!!!
Judging on the stuff that Noel has cited as influences (off the top of my head...beatles, zombies, left banke, beegees, burt bacharach, etc) I just can't believe that he would dislike the beachboys.
If Noel did mention that he didn't like the beachboys then he was either joking or showing ignorance. Brian Wilson is a melody genius and I can't see how Noel wouldn't revere him as such...
liamosz, it is good to find another beachboy fan on the forum...i agree with you that sunflower and surf's up are very good (i have holland but i never got into it)...but i prefer wild honey, smiley/smile, friends, 20/20 and love you for post- pet sound albums...my favourite beachboy albums vacilate between petsounds and beach boys today!...
hey what did you think of the smile re-recording from last year?
btw. the importance of being idle is the best 'lazy man' song since 'busy doing nothing' which was on the album 'friends'.

What was it he said one time
"If you'd told me ten years ago that I'd be in a band with my brother and a bunch of guys who don't even like football I'd tell you to fuck off. I'm not in the Beach Boys"
Something to that effect... I butchered that quote... hope someone can find it

There is a quote from him about the Beach Boys, but I don't remember exactly what he said.

Found the quote NME 4 June 2005
The question was
Noel, do you still hate The Beach Boys? You Should give them a go, they're quite good.
Noel: "I fucking LOATHE them. Barbershop quartet music. Rubbish. Six tunes they've got and the only reason they're as big as they are is because they're racked next to The Beatles in HMV. They are Fuckin with a G - FUCKING SHIT. Fucking whatisname (Brian Wilson) is a cabbage. Genius? My arse!"
Andy: "I'm shaking my head on tape now."
Noel: "He hates them really! they didn't even write their own lyrics. End of fucking story. Geezer who writes the tunes didn't write the words? And the rest of them didn’t play on the records? Fuck off, they're shit! We use it as an insult. Fuck off you Beach Boy. Mark Beaumont's a Beach Boy! There's plenty of Beach boys at NME."
Liam: "You fookin' bunch of Beach Boys!"

Mark Beaumont's a Beach Boy! There's plenty of Beach boys at NME." Liam: "You fookin' bunch of Beach Boys!" thanks for the quote: lets dissect: statement: beachboys music is barbershop quartet music rebuttal: beachboys music was a mix of group vocals (like the four lads and ink sports), rock and roll (chuck berry), surf instrumental (dick dale) and tin-pan alley pop (gershwin to spector). While they wore striped shirts they were not barbershop music. statement: they wrote six songs. rebuttal: between 1962 and 1966, the beach boys recorded twelve albums (and after that they released another ten or so in the following decade). a large majority of these songs were written by brian wilson. While it is true that they are well known for their early california songs (i get around, help me rhonda, surfer girl), any lover of rock and roll music (which noel often claims to be) would be well aware that brian wilson in his post 65 songs created works of genius that have been cited by a large array of artists and critics as some of the greatest music of the rock era. statement: they are as big as they are because they are stocked beside the beatles. rebuttal: the beachboys were popular inspite of the beatles. they had numerous smash hits in the two years before the beatles came across the ocean and were one of the few american acts that continued to succeed after the british invasion. statement: the guy who wrote the music didn't write the words. rebuttal: well that statement has some validity. it is true that wilson had a few co-writers but he still wrote a fair share on his own (and in fact, some research would show that some of his most personal music was solely written by him.) And anyway what the fuck is noel on about-he says he likes the stones and led zeppelin and yet they performed music that was primairily written by a lyricist (jagger and plant) while another band member (richards and page) composed the music. He is right that after a certain point (around 1964) the music became too complex for the actual beach boys to perform and brian wilson had to get seasoned musicians to play out the music. VERDICT: Noel has repeatedly shown great ignorance in his statements pertaining to the beachboys proving once again that no one is perfect. btw. noel songs such as idlers dream and iobi borrow heavily from the beach boy cannon (wheteher he knows it or not)

Noel - as a songwriter - is a complete idiot for not liking The Beach Boys. Not just an idiot, but a complete moron!
It's like an aspiring football manager telling us the great Ajax side of the 1970s were a load of shit.

I'm no Beach Boys fan but I sure do love Frank Black's cover of the original version of ' I Know There's an Answer'. And with more than a handful of Joey Santiago magic sprinkled in the mix it's almost as if the Pixies never broke up at all.

I just got a Pet Sounds boxset - 4 CDs, the flowing robes, sand and dynamite pills. I've yet to tackle it - there's like 10 versions of "God Only Knows".
Also, really looking forward to the movie, 'Love & Mercy'.
God bless.

Found myself a couple months back working nights on my own for a while, it was quite surreal, just played smile the whole time, really made what could have been a creepy shitty experience kinda cool. Perfect soundtrack
Wonderful might be one of the best songs ever

Pet Sounds is pretty much a top 5 Pop album of all time in terms of quality songwriting and influence. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows are both two of the top 100 songs of all time, which is pretty impressive. Probably in the top 50 as well if you broke it down that far. Good Vibrations makes the cut as well.
That said, I'm not that big on the Beach Boys. Wilson is a genius, although he's a mad one whose come up with he's own fair share of shitty material. Their early stuff is fun for what it is, but I kinda just get tired of their voices. I know people adore the beach boys and their harmonies but sometimes they sound like white square boy barbershop group and they just annoy the fuck out of me. WEEE WOOO AHHHH. Mike Love is also a big time tool.
I'm not gonna say they are the most overrated group of all time, because they aren't but they'd probably make my personal top 5. I love a good amount of their songs and while I'm amazed by Pet Sounds when i do listen to it, its not really an album that I love.

Really shows what a pioneer and perfectionist Wilson was in the studios - like being in the studio with them. My respect for the man went up tenfold, but tinged with sadness knowing what seemed like a certified masterpiece was never completed.

He "might" learn something from them. I also enjoy Dennis Wilson's solo album.
