A little while ago I watched this film called "24 Hour Party People" and the film drew me in to the whole Manchester scene od the eighties. I since have discovered the greatness of Joy Division and New Order. I was already into The Smiths and The Stone Roses and I'm kinda getting into the Happy Mondays. I have to say though some of Shawn Ryder's antics make Liam look like a novice. This has been a great scene for me to get into since I'm kinda getting out of punk since I'm all angered out in a sense. Apart from the bands above though, what would anyone else reccommend? By the way, out of curiosity, between the Roses and the Mondays, which two were more popular back then in Manchester? Did the Roses every play the Hausienda?

The Roses played the Hacienda once to my knowledge, which was broadcast late night on TV at the time (you'll be able to find a boot of it somewhere if you look hard enough)
The Roses got a real bad reputation in Manc around '87 when Ian and Mani (allegedly) spray painted the bands name on pretty much any wall they could find. The press weren't happy about that and so they got a reputation as being a loutish lad band. They had to rely on a bit of a cult following and often put on their own gigs (sometimes hiring out warehouses) or playing the clubs owned by their manager.
The Mondays were probably more popular as they fitted in with the dance orientated scene that was springing up at the time.
To be honest, Manc being a big student city, didn't really take to either band until they'd made it big elsewhere. The more arty Smiths were the band that everyone liked
