SECOND COMING FOR ROSES CLASSICS
Ian Brown has played a full set of Stone Roses songs for the first time in almost ten years, NME.COM can reveal.
The singer made a one-off live appearance last night (July 25) at the Claremont Landscape Garden National Trust park in the south east of England.
The gig, Brown’s biggest of the year, was made during a break from recording his fourth solo album, which is due later this year.
NME.COM can reveal that for the show the Stone Roses star hired members of a tribute band called ’Fools Gold’, and played an hour of classics, including ’I Wanna Be Adored’, ’Fools Gold’ and ’Waterfall’.
Also included in the set were rare Roses tunes like ’Mersey Paradise’ and ’Where Angels Play’.
Although Brown has played the odd Roses song since the band’s split in 1996, it is the first time he’s played many of the songs since the ‘90s.
One fan at the show told NME.COM: “I wasn’t old enough to see the Stone Roses and I’ve seen loads of tribute bands, but this is the closest anyone will ever get to seeing the real thing.”<br> During the encore, Brown performed a number of his solo hits, including ’My Star’ and ’F.E.A.R’.
The Stone Roses split in 1996 following what is now regarded as a catastrophic appearance at the Reading Festival. At the gig, only Brown and bassist Mani remained, following the departure of drummer Reni and guitarist John Squire.
The set list ran:
‘I Wanna Be Adored’ ‘Sally Cinnamon’ ‘Song For My (Sugar Spun Sister)’ ‘Waterfall’ ‘Mersey Paradise' ‘Made Of Stone’ ‘She Bangs The Drums’ ’Where Angels Play’ ‘Elizabeth My Dear’ ’I Am The Resurrection’ ‘Fools Gold’ ‘My Star’ ’If Dolphins Were Monkeys’ ’Golden Gaze’ ‘F.E.A.R.’ ’Time Is My Everything’
The gig itself took place in stunning surroundings. The Claremont Landscape Garden dates from the reign of Queen Anne, with the stage erected in front of a three-acre turf amphitheatre. It is the only surviving example in Europe, having been designed around 1722.

They should get back together for one last tour - Reni included. I know Mani's up for it. So come on Monkey Boy, get that gang back together!

Don't think the Roses will ever re-unite, all I've read points the other way. It would be great if the could go back where they used to be, but as at least Ian & John are always saying, time has moved on and it'll never be the same. Hope someone recorded Ian's gig, 'cos you'll never know if he'll do something like that again. Would make an awesome bootleg.

Last time I saw Ian Brown they played the intro and first verse of fools gold and then stopped and played something else.
Everyone still loved it though.

it is dead people.
it wont ever happen and if it did then they would be well past the greatness that they were once.
you wanna see a played out washed out reunion where they pretend to play the songs for tons of money?
fuck it! that will happen anyway.
the roses are dead.

anyway! oasis stole the roses crown because they are a fucking greater band by far!
they may not be as cool but they are the greatest live band since the sex pistols and they have many more songs that are greatness.
the roses were pretty crap live!
oasis live says it all!

Being cool is more than looking cool, and I think the Roses all looked real. (Seen some early 80's photos, same thing as Oasis early 90's, looked stupid). The Stone Roses debut album tends to score high in every list of best 100 albums or whatever, it's timeless. But yeah, they George Bested it, everyone does eventually. Hope they're strong enough not to ruin the good memories.

I agree barron that I wouldnt wanna see them get back together for money, only if the four guys wanted to do it and orchestrated it themselves. I just think its a shame that Reni never played any live shows after the Second Coming was released. He's the greatest drummer I've ever seen, and the last time he played drums live was at Glasgow Green in 1990. Thats a real shame. I'd just love to see them do a one-off show together to end it properly. Something like a wharehouse gig like their early days would be great.
