Stone Roses 'top British album'


The Stones Roses' album beat the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
The Stones Roses' self-titled 1989 debut album has been voted the best British album of all time in a Sunday newspaper poll.
The Observer Music Monthly poll of 100 musicians and critics voted the album ahead of The Beatles' Revolver (1966).

The Clash's London Calling and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks took third and fourth place.

The Beatles and David Bowie led the list, both with five albums in the top 100 list.

The top ten list did not feature Radiohead's OK Computer (24)- consistently ranked the greatest of British album in many lists - nor Oasis' debut Definitely Maybe (19).

Other perennials ignored in the top ten included The Smiths' The Queen is Dead (37) and Primal Scream's Screamadelica (68).

"This is the sort of poll you might conduct over Sunday lunch with friends; which are the greatest British albums of all time," said Observer Music Monthly editor Caspar Llewellyn Smith.

"Once you start to draw up your own list, the questions begin: should I pick my favourites, or albums which conform to an idea of greatness," he said.

Artists and broadcasters who contributed to the list included Morrissey, James Dean Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers, Mike Skinner of The Streets, DJ Trevor Nelson and BBC Radio 1's Sara Cox.

Other records that made it into the list included Kate Bush's Hounds of Love (22), Echo & the Bunnymen's Ocean Rain, Brian Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets and Teenage Fanclub's Grand Prix (72)
