Q Magazine says the White Stripes' Elephant was the best album of 2003.
Blur's Think Tank was second, ahead of The Mars Volta with De-Loused in the Comatorium in third place.
Kings of Leon were fourth with Youth and Young Manhood and Justin Timberlake's Justifield was fifth.
Some of the favourites for the top slot fared less well than many of their fans will have expected including The Darkness at No 9, Radiohead at 11, and Kylie Minogue at No 50.
Q said Elephant was an album of raw garage punk that had defied all logic by going double platinum.
Detroit duo Jack and Meg White recorded the album on ancient equipment in an East London studio called Toerag.
Q concluded: "Elephant's greatest legacy will be convincing a new generation of wannabe rock stars that small and strange can still be massive."
The rest of the top ten were: No 6 - 50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Tryin', No 7 - The Strokes, Room on Fire; No 8 - Outkast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below; No 9 - The Darkness, Permission to Land; No 10 - Jane's Addiction, Strays.

I can't stand WS..may I should give Jack some guitar lessons..did anyone see their performance on EMA this year?foockin' miserable! all they need is new singer, new drummer, new bassist, new leadguitarist and especially new stylist!..and almost all songs on the album sounds like the same..
