The 12 Pop Idol finalists are to make a bid for the Christmas number one with a cover of John Lennon's Happy Xmas (War Is Over).
And they are looking to make it a festive double whammy - they are also releasing a Christmas album.
Bookmakers immediately made them odds-on to top the chart, ahead of previous favourites The Darkness, but music industry experts predict the retro rockers could still steal the number one spot.
Gennaro Castaldo of HMV said: "This could be one of the tightest races for the Christmas number one in recent years.
"The Pop Idol finalists have got to be among the favourites, particularly as they're covering a Christmas classic and the show still attracts millions of viewers - you only need a small proportion to buy the single to make it a huge hit.
"But it will be interesting to see if the record-buying public are beginning to tire of reality TV. The main challenge will come from The Darkness. They have had a fantastic year and their Slade-style track and video will have huge office party appeal."
The Darkness release is called (Christmas Time) Don't Let The Bells End. Other acts in the running for the festive number one spot include Avid Merrion, who is releasing a novelty song based on Little Drummer Boy; Sir Cliff Richard, with his single Santa's List; and boyband Blue, who have covered Stevie Wonder's Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours and are duetting with the man himself.
The Pop Idol finalists release their single on December 15 and the album a week earlier. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) was originally a hit for John and Yoko and the Plastic Ono Band in 1972, reaching number two.
Bookmakers William Hill have made the single 1/2 favourite, followed by The Darkness at 6/1, Avid Merrion at 10/1 and Cliff Richard at 12/1. Ladbrokes are offering odds of 4/1 that the Pop Idols will get the Christmas number one and album.

I won't be buying any of those singles... now if Stop the Clocks was released...then we'd have a proper Chrimbo number 1

i saw the darkness at glastonbury on the first morning. i wasnt to impressed, they were good at playing there songs but they dont seem to have an original idea amongst them. There singers voice is a bit to high for me aswell. The day got better though R.E.M. were just amazing!
