Hundreds of Elton John fans were given free tickets for his first ever concert in Romania to fill up the stadium.
Fans who had gathered outside the Bucharest Cotroceni Stadium were stunned when concert organisers said they could go in for free as the star shouldn't have to perform in a nearly empty venue.
Organisers The Art Production Foundation said they did not want to embarrass the pop star after they had failed to sell the 15,000 tickets available.
The concert was billed as "the musical event of the year in Romania", but most Romanians couldn't afford the ticket prices of between £11 and £80.
The singer, who arrived in Bucharest two hours before the concert started and left straight afterwards for a gig in Budapest, thrilled the crowd.
His AIDS foundation is currently involved in three projects in Romania.
