From correspondents in Tokyo March 06, 2003
FRESH from winning his 14th Brit Award, the British version of the Grammy, and signing a $US125 million ($A203.09 million) contract with record label EMI, Robbie Williams would seem to be a natural export to US pop charts. "A lot has been said about me going to the States, 'Why hasn't he broken the States?"' said the 29-year-old British pop star during a trip to Japan to promote his new album, Escapology. "I'm more excited to be doing something here."
Williams, who first found fame with boy band Take That, has sold 28 million albums - 10 million in Britain alone. His hits include Millennium and Rock DJ.
"I was in New York last week," he said. "They were a really hard audience. I was really scared. When I'm in Japan, people are very respectful. It's very safe and very sweet."
Williams took home honours last month as the top British male solo artist at the Brit Awards.
