14 February 2003 Controversial Moscow-pop jailbait Tatu have recorded a cover of The Smiths How Soon Is Now. The re-recording of Morrissey and Marr's original 1984 classic appears on Tatu's debut album 200km/h In The Wrong Lane, an LP which has shifted over 2m copies so far. Diehard shoegazing Smiths fans shook their gladioli in impotent fury after hearing the tune, with one hyperbolic website post describing the Tatu cover as a "crime against humanity." One half of the russki lesbian poplets, Julia Volkova, said she had never heard of The Smiths before she was presented with the song by her producers. I myself always thought that the Partridge Family should have covered that Smiths classic first
