During last weeks Vines concert at Boston Heard the rest of the tour was cancelled They always did like to smash up their gear but why eachother ... WHAT'S going on with The Vines, man? The international music scene is abuzz with talk that the Hurstville grunge merchants have cancelled overseas dates for the first quarter of 2003 because of a rift between bug-eyed frontman Craig Nicholls and bass player Patrick Matthews. Not so, says an insider close to the band, who cites exhaustion from 18 months of touring as the trigger for the enforced break. What no one appears to dispute is the on-stage brawl between Nicholls and Matthews during a gig in Boston on December 11. According to witnesses, Nicholls lost it when Matthews broke a bass string during Ain't no room. Nicholls clonked Matthews on the head with his microphone then the bass player lunged at Nicholls and the two traded blows as they fell into a delighted mosh pit. According to British music bible NME, the brawl prompted an order for the band to return home for a much-needed rest. The final dates on their US tour – two radio shows in Indianapolis and Detroit – were cancelled. All dates outside Australia for the first quarter of 2003 have now been cancelled, including the band's Japan and US tours. The only commitment the Vines will cling to are the Big Day Out shows in Australia later this month. Vines management was unavailable for comment yesterday but a source close to the band ruled out talk of a major rift. "If they're having a break it would have more to do with the fact they've been moving from hotel room to hotel room for the last 18 months," the insider said. "That would take its toll on anyone and people tend to forget these guys are still kids in many ways."
