It has to be the clash for me. their songs are more up beat, faster tempo, happier, catchier.
Paul Weller, though, is a better singer
what do y'all think? also, what are some other good english punk bands from the 80s?
cheers

This thread lacks The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks, among others.
The Buzzcocks=The Jam>The Sex Pistols>The Clash

This thread lacks The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks, among others. True...however The Jam weren't a punk band, not to me anyway. "In The City" was a punky album, but the other ones weren't and The Buzzcocks were a great band with great pop tunes. So I would say: Pistols The Clash The Damned Sham 69 Black Flag and at last, but not least (they were not English, but from Northern Ireland) the greatest, Stiff Little Fingers.

True, I sometimes have a hard time calling The Buzzcocks punk at times, they did have plenty of good pop singles.

Tough one but I'll go with the Clash. THe Jam were more of a mod band than a punk band anyway.

Clash: more intelligent lyrics and political commitment. Jam are just more fashionable. Other punk band: Sex Pistols (number 1) The Damned The Exploited The Adverts

The clash... their first two albums are imo the best punk records ever made, only rivalled by the ramones. London Calling is one of my top 10 records ever, Sandinista! is fantastic. it's too long but it's still great. Combat Rock I don't like that much... They were GREAT live too

London Calling is one of the best records of all time. I believe Rolling Stone magazine ranked it the 8th best album of all time.
