Man that was brilliant, even to somebody like me who could write all his knowledge of guitars and pedals on the back of a postage stamp.
Great to see Noel playing those riffs again and talking to fondly about the early Oasis days and the gear they used etc.
One thing - Noel said Bonehead didn't take his Epiphone with him when he left and Noel still had it, that's surely not true? Or is that a different guitar he's on about?

Doesn't add up. Bonehead's main one during the Oasis years is the one that he still owns and plays, there are a few details that make it recognisable in both old and recent pics. My bet is that Bonehead had probably got an identical spare one, which remained in Noel's possession. Or... maybe Noel is talking about the other Riviera, the one with the Bigsby which is on the cover of DM... and he's mixing up the two guitars.

By the way... it's nice to see that I was right about the background history of the black Les Paul almost six years ago Enough with the Liam vs Noel shit! Here's a long, geeky and incredibly boring post about guitars I was watching this video of Noel performing 'In the Heat of the Moment' at Saturday's U2 gig in Twickenham, and I noticed he was playing a Gibson Les Paul guitar (first time he's used one since 2009). But that's no ordinary Les Paul, I believe... As most of you already know, shortly after the gig at King Tut's on May 31 1993 Johnny Marr lent Noel a cherry sunburst 1960s Gibson Les Paul which was previously owned by Pete Townshend of The Who. In Johnny's words: Noel played this priceless guitar extensively throughout 1994 (you can see it in the Live Forever video), but it got damaged during the infamous Newcastle gig on August 9 1994 when a fan climbed on stage and (apparently) Noel used the guitar to defend himself. And then... Johnny gave Noel another Les Paul guitar, a black one this time: The guitar we're talking about now is a black 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom. According to the Smiths on Guitar website, it was one of Johnny's main stage guitars in 1985. But there's more... Johnny claimed that he wrote 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' on it (!!!), and that you can hear it pretty much everywhere on 'The Queen Is Dead' album: This guitar is easily recognizable because it's got a very small toggle switch between the volume knobs, as you can see in this picture from the 1986 Smiths tour: It's not an original factory feature on Les Pauls, so it was likely added by a guitar tech between 1972 and 1985, and it probably is a coil-splitting switch that you can use to modify the guitar sound when needed (it makes humbucker pickups sound like single-coil pickups). When Noel got the black Les Paul, he added a white/cream pickguard and then put a large Oasis sticker on it. Here's him playing it in 1994 (check out the little silver switch between volume knobs): Noel is seen playing the black Les Paul in the 'Whatever' video too (which was filmed on December 5 1994): And we now jump to June 7, 1997. New York, the infamous Tibetan Freedom concert (short clip here). Noel playing solo, electric, in front of a huge Marshall amp stack: too much cocaine, baby Anyway, there's our black Les Paul, but the Oasis sticker on the pickguard is gone (the little switch is still there though): Between 1997 and 2000 the black Les Paul gets a few modifications: the cream pickguard, the cream pickup switch ring and the amber volume/tone knobs are replaced with black ones (that's how Les Paul Customs originally came out of the factory, with black plastic parts). The humbucker pickups are replaced by what looks like a couple of single-coil ones (P-90s?). Here are two pics (I don't know when the left one was taken, but the right one is from May 2001): It looks different, and of course it might be a completely different Les Paul Custom (Noel could definitely afford a new one!), but look closely: the small toggle switch between the knobs gives it away, it's Johnny Marr's old Les Paul! Ironically, due to the pickup change, I believe the small switch is now useless and it's probably no longer part of the electrical wiring of the guitar. Noel used the guitar in a few gigs between 2000 and 2001, and then it got tucked away somewhere in Noel's hideout... until 2014. Here is a screenshot of the video for 'In the Heat of the Moment' ( link) That looks like a black Gibson Les Paul Custom... but it's got some arrow-shaped white stickers on it. Could it be the Marr one? That's what I believed but I had no proof until yesterday. The fan-filmed footage from Saturday's U2 gig gave me a clear answer. Look closely... yep, that's the little switch It may have some ugly stickers on it, but this guitar is a real piece of British music history. And that's the end of this 30-years-long super geeky and super useless post about a single guitar. I know that this info is totally unimportant, but it's still insanely cool to know that one of the guitars that Noel's bringing out on tour is the one which Marr allegedly used when writing 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' and other Smiths tunes from 'The Queen Is Dead'

This will be amazing. Noel is a huge name, I never thought he would accept to do something like this. It will be great to see him noodling with guitars in an intimate situation. I think he's so bored of the standard "what do you think of *insert random world matter here*" and "the state of music" and "when are Oasis back together" interviews that he really likes doing stuff when he can just talk music these days Yeah, I think a lot of the problem is most journalists don't seem to have any imagination, so they're just sent to ask very generic questions but Noel seems like he's actually up for different types interviews where he can relax and be in a scenario where we don't usually see him, like this one or like that interview where he was having the chicken with the hot sauce We could probably get a lot of good content from musiciansif people had more imagination with their style of journalism Although maybe things are heading that way in general now, with popular YouTube channels coming at things from a different angle.

This is fucking brilliant! Noel being himself, passionate, geeky and opening up a bit. Giving a Nod to Gem and Bonehead too. Great stories and even better guitars!

this is probably the closest you get when it comes to see how noel is as a person, when he is not doing interviews and answering stupid questions, that have been answered a million time before. i've never seen him being so kind and open. this was basically a chat between some guitar geeks. great interview!

Great stuff, i love how he just drew the settings on the pedal to remember where to place the nobs Overall, that's the real Noel, humble, just talking about music and not being overcomplicated about it.

Not until watching this did I ever think that Noel has both the ability and drive to do further Oasis material / gigs. He might not even realise it himself, but I think there is a dormant passion for that early Oasis sound. He loves it.
Fantastic interview/session.

In this recent interview he claims to have written a stadium rock album during the pandemic… live4ever.proboards.com/thread/94137/dave-fanning-interview-on-rte2Another interview where he’s on good form, worth a listen if you’ve not yet. 🏟️

The whole thing was gold and great to see Noel geeking out for once instead of pretending he doesn't care about music and gear, but the standout moment for me was that little Bonehead story Noel snuck in there:
American music rep: You only played the four same chords all night. Bonehead: And you just paid $40 to see it!

Best Noel interview in years. I’ve wanted one of these videos for about 15 years but it could have been a couple of two hour videos and I’d have loved it!

Was kinda sad to see him struggle to attempt to play the DLBIA solo, and also the Slide Away intro (the rhythm picking, not the lead)

Possibly one of Noel’s best ever interviews, up there with the one on the hotel balcony in Japan in March 2000 where he’s wearing the blue adidas jacket.
How long have we waited for an interview about the details we want to hear about!
Love the bit at 58:29 where Noel plays “the don’t look bank in anger chord” and the guy reacts like I would react, shame he didn’t explain it afterwards.
Never thought I would hear Noel play cigarettes and alcohol or Columbia ever again.
Shame they didn’t include his acoustic guitars but to be fair it is a pedal show.

I suppose he never did one of these kind of guitar interviews as he thinks he’s not technically a great guitarist like for instance Marr or Weller etc.
In reality Noel has his own style and no one can play exactly like him …except perhaps Gem!

Great interview and great to see Noel just talk about guitars and gear. No drama, no issues, just the tools. I recently bought the new Epiphone NG signature Riviera and it was cool to see Noel playing his. Just for fun, I looked up the prices of some of those pedals and I think I'll need a number one song before I can afford some of those.
