I do like the first album but the production ruins it a bit for me. Agree with that, some songs with great potential that become a drag. The Death of You and Me is the only song I really go back to at all. For me right now it's: 1. CS 2. WBTM 3. CY 4. Debut Chasing yesterday for me is very up and down. Great highs, but I can't get fully behind an album with Lock all the doors, X ray eyes, and The Mexican on it. Dying of the light I got bored of very quickly too although I can appreciate it's a nice enough melody. The Riverman is one I have just never got, I know everyone loves it, and I just don't get it! I don't hate it or anything, it's just very meh to me, I wish I could find what everyone else is hearing in it. WBTM needs to lose black and white sunshine, not sure how that got past David Holmes. Shame INGUT wasn't finished for it. But then we wouldn't have it now so... Sardy is a terrible producer and this is why I don't want Noel to work with him ever again. He just makes the songs sound so plodding and boring. |

Too early to know where Council Skies falls. But I’m enjoying it this far. As for the others…
High Flying Birds
One or two songs I’m not a fan of but take them out and put in Alone on the Rope and Let the Lord Shine a Light On Me and it becomes a really good listen front to back. Need to find my old playlist for it as I’ve lost it in transition from laptops/phones.
Chasing Yesterday
Likewise, had a really good playlist for this album too. Unsure if I prefer it to first album. Depends on the mood I guess.
Who Built The Moon
Meh. Not the biggest fan of this album but love the title track. Worst album for me.
Blue Moon Rising (aka the 3 Eps + We’re On Our Way Now/Flying On The Ground)
I’m in the minority and really like most of these songs. Got a nice 11-track playlist that I play often.
I’ll probably, gun to the head, go;
1) HFB
2) Chasing Yesterday
3) Blue Moon Rising
4) Who Built The Moon?
However, depending on mood those first 3 can swap positions.

It’s too early to judge ‘Council Skies’ so ranking the others I’d say I’d also rank them in the order of when they came out. The E.P’s were pretty bad, ‘Council Skies’ is an improvement over them.

I'm really surprised to see all the top slots for Chasing Yesterday. Some amazing songs for sure but just as much filler.

I'm answering this after only one listen of Council Skies.
1- CY: to me, this one is the best musically of all of his solo records and it has my now second all time favourite song of his, which is Ballad of the Might I (Dead To The World is now my favourite of all time).
2- WBTM: Still my favourite as a whole record. I know this sounds contradictory with my previous point, but to me WBTM is not just a Noel record but a Noel/Holmes record.
3- Council Skies: I feel like this one is more in the NGHFB vein but richer and more developped. It's good but it's lacks the weirdness I first felt and ended up loving on CY and WBTM, except maybe There She Blows and Think of a Number. I love what he did with We're Gonna Get There in the End and Don't Stop though.
4- NGHFB: The weakest one. I was never a fan of either Record Machine nor Stop The Clocks, even when the demos leaked. It's got great songs but he was still writing for Oasis and it shows. He's evolved since and kept some of that evolution for CS.
5- The EPs: He just threw a bunch of songs together for these so there's 0 cohesion. Sail On is a lost gem, other songs are pretty good and the title tracks of each EPs are the weakest of the bunch along with Evil Flower and Come Out Outside (the final version is just bland).
