Virgin Radio Classic Album - Oasis Be Here Now Interview with Producer Owen Morris Owen has been interviewed before but I don’t remember him being as candid as this. Well worth a listen, fascinating stuff. virginradio.co.uk/catchup/20220821-11530?selectedStation=virginradioukMay 1996 Owen flew out to Mustique to work with Noel on the demos recording them on an 8 track. He says everything between him and Noel was fine. He says in hindsight that the band should have gone in to record the third album once the demos were done and before the Knebworth gigs. Owen was mixing the sound for the MTV unplugged performance in August 1996. The day before the performance Liam told him he didn’t want to tour America. There was a big argument and Liam doesn’t sing the next day. Noel “semi blames” Owen for this. Owen next sees Noel for the Abbey Road Sessions Says Noel tells him he has recently received a £15-17 million publishing advance. The band do not rehearse before the sessions, Noel says he has given the band the Mustique demos tape to listen to instead. They spent two weeks in Abbey Road and recorded the track Stay Young. There were issues with the media trying to get in the studio and the paparazzi chasing Liam. Noel was saying he didn’t want Liam to sing his songs and that he should be singing as he had sung on the last American tour without Liam. Liam and Noel not in the studio at the same time. Owen asked to stop the sessions but Noel decided to move studios Then went to Ridge Farm Studios for six weeks Liam would turn up for a day or so then go again Says the sessions were sounding soulless so asked Noel to get the band to rehearse the songs but Noel refused Describes Noel as a “Megalomaniac” at this time. Manager Marcus Russell was trying to keep the band together and keep things going. Break for Christmas Supposed to resume recording in January but Noel goes on holiday back to Mustique for a month. Owen and Liam go into the studio for a week, record the vocal for Stand by me, My Big Mouth, Be Here Now and Don’t Go Away. When Noel returns from holiday he goes “mental” after listening to the vocals saying they are s**t. Owen rings Marcus Russell saying he thinks he should quit to which Marcus tells him “Owen, I’m not having you sacrificed on the alter of the Gallagher brothers”. They then went to Air Studios where they finished the album. One member of the band had a breakdown and wanted to leave (He didn’t say who, only confirming it wasn’t Noel). The next day Alan McGee turned up for a play back of the album, saw the aftermath of it and blamed Owen for not being in control of the sessions. Noel not listening to Owen and wanting to put more guitar tracks on. Noel not turning up towards the end of the sessions. Moved to Orinoco studios to mix the album Liam got married unexpectedly and didn’t return

Just been thinking about this
Not a great time for the band by the sounds of it. It seems the impact of Liam refusing to sing at the MTV Unplugged performance then getting off the plane before the band left for the American arena tour in September had a lasting impact into the recording sessions.
Pressures on the band to make the album after the success of WTSMG
Pressure and intrusion from the media spotlight
Drugs and alcohol in the studio
No wonder Noel hates the album, not great memories.

Agreed. I know this has been said before but the band really needed a good break after the Morning Glory tour which they should have had and not rushed into the making of Be Here Now like they did.

The band and Liam going off the rails, Noel disappearing up his own arse. Not that surprising given how big they were and the attention that was on them at the time.

Interesting interview. But even if the making of the album was 'bad vibes' the sound of the album is quite joyous and energetic.

That was fantastic. It's kind of amazing none of this had ever come out in 25 years.

I think with the passage of 25 years he felt more comfortable to speak about it, also he’s been out of the inner circle of the band and others who have stories are still close for example manager Marcus Russell, guitar tech Jason Rhoades or gig DJ Phil Smith

Was interesting to hear all this. Especially how he thought Stay Young should have not only been on the album, but been the lead single. And thinking about it, it doesnt sound too bad an idea.
And yes, I think his openness is because hes not exactly a BFF of the Oasis camp. Although tbf, in an article about CMYK he said he’d still consider working with Liam again.

Love stay young, positive vibes and energy. Perhaps it is more well thought of as it is a b side, maybe it’s impact would have been lost as another album track.

I do like Stay Young but I'm glad that it wasn't the lead single from Be Here Now. D' You Know What I Mean was the perfect lead single I think.

In hindsight Stay Young would have been a good single in summer 96 to keep the momentum going - not that it needed it in terms of hype, maybe just new music. It's weird they had no release of any kind in the UK in the six months before Knebworth.

I seem to remember they were thinking of releasing either my big mouth or it’s getting better man around October or November 1996. Not sure they had recorded those songs by then. Apologies I’m not able to back that up with where I read it.

Seems to have been taken off the Virgin Radio site - Noel’s lawyers must have had a word.

Seems to have been taken off the Virgin Radio site - Noel’s lawyers must have had a word. I expect old shows drop off the website after 10 days or so. A real shame if we can’t hear it again as it was a very candid interview, not many of those about!
