6/10 Very catchy in parts - but disjointed in others. Decent lyrics, nice vocals, nice instrumentation and production. All in all a nice little "above average" tune to promote the compilation. I'd call this everything but disjointed tbh

1. I believe this is NG at his best in years. He crafted a fine summer tune with a melancholic vibe. Makes me think of a summer sunset.
2. The production is more "colourful" than in any other song HG has released in the last three years or so, although the brass section could have been much better.
3. Lyrics are ok. They've never been one of NG's strenghts and never will be.
4. It is there with The right stuff and The man who built the Moon as his most interesting, solid post-Oasis songs. Of course, in my opinion.

It's a grower! First few listens were 6-7/10, but now it's a solid 8/10.
I don't know anything (technical) about music, but how do the first 5 seconds have an instantly 70s feel? Is it the instruments, music style or ? Genuinely interested.

Loving the instrumental, really fresh and colourful.
Can't shake the feeling that the chorus feels more like a bridge, though.

I'm not too bothered by shit lyrics overall, mainly because english is not my first language. It's just another instrument to me. Well except if you make lyrics with Schooel and Pooel You seem to have excellent English, whatever your first language might be ... But, a big part of why Bacharach songs transcend most short-lived pop is not just "that Bacharach sound," which is definitely major, but because of Hal David's lyrics, which hit people where they live. I'm actually a big lyrics person, myself, but I don't mind rhyming pool and school at all, especially in a rock ballad. The point behind those lines is simple but poignant and honest, which is why it hit such a chord with people, and it's much harder to do than people think. When it comes to lyrics, Noel gets off too easy. He's not incapable at all. He has written some fine lyrics. He's just a very guarded person. When he lets the guard down, he has things to say. Yeah i agree about simple lyrics, they can be the best simply because they have an emotional background. As a songwriter you have to find the right word, the right timing for the sentence, and the right way of saying a word in a song. Noel is very good at it. As for the foreign language part, there's always that distance when you listen to a song that's not from your birth language. That's why i dont really fully relate to words in a song. There's songs i've listened to since i was a teenager and i couldn't really say what the words are. You tend to get lost more in a song when your brain dont recognize the words right away. I dont really like music that's made in my own language for instance. They are written differently, melody is not the most important, words are. I dont relate to that, because the first time i heard a Beatles song (or a Michael Jackson song, he really used words as an instrument too) i thought, that's it, english is the perfect combination. It is the language of music to me, no other language can be that.

Love it on first listen, it has the potential to be one of his best solo songs.

Of course, we want to hear Noel sing but I wonder should he have let one of the girls sing the lead vocals? That would have given it that little bit more of a soulful vibe I think.

6.5 out of 10 I think.
Nice vibe to it, strings are cool too but it sounds a bit throwaway in places. The song doesn't really go anywhere imo, needed a stronger chorus.

Love it more and more every time I listen to it.
The EPs and these two new tracks have been a godsend.
Please Noel, just keep putting out new tunes every three months!!

Yacht rock. Made me want to reach for my portable radio as I'm stretched out on a blanket at the beach in the summer of '77 and turn the dial only to find The Pina Colada Song, so then I just turn the radio off.

6.5/10.
This songs, more into the classic vibes, are good, nice...well done, the strings section it's quite fine. But at the same time, it's not a song that will last with me through time.

Alright song. 7/10 I understand the Weller/Style Council comparison. Prefer We're On Our Way Now.

Can't get this tune out of my head. I really wasn't expecting it to be this good.

I'm afraid that he has taken a look at the numbers and decided to pull back on the experimenting. I don't love all the new stuff but the idea of him going further out on a limb is what I like, not safe easy listening songs. It also seems like he has gone away from the Holmes "write it all in the studio" and gone back to writing at home and recording. His last several songs are utterly forgettable IMO.

I like it. The second it came on I heard a famous Motown song though. Can’t place the song — maybe Al Green?

These are tunes he had left (I would guess from Chasing Yesterday) that he finished off to put on the Best Of. I don’t think they’re indicative of what the next album will be like. He’s said he has 4 or 5 tunes written in the studio for the new record. He’s described them as more acoustic and atmospheric. I would describe either of these tracks as atmospheric. I think he is going to move away from the disco based stuff, he’s done an album and 3 EPs, no need to keep banging that drum either. I think the new stuff will sound familiar but fresh. At least I hope so. I don’t think we’re in for an album of If I Had a Guns though.

Also feel like it needs a middle-eight or guitar solo at the 2:21 mark. I like it, but it's not as complete or moving as We're On Our Way Now.

Interestingly I find We’re On Our Way Now almost completely forgettable. After multiple listens it never stays in my head. Struggling to remember a hook as I type this. Whereas Flying On The Ground has been in my head all day after just one listen. Weird how different people’s ears work isn’t it? X

I feel the opposite I love We're On Our Way for what it is, but felt there was something missing in the way it was built This is shorter, pretty much a no-nonsense pop track, but to me it's got what We're On Our Way didn't have, and it's more complete despite going on for quite a short time The way it's structured with the instrumental break (not as empty as the WOOWN one) after the chorus and then the ending repeating the verse just make it richer and better constructed Also, on the moving bit, they're just different tunes, WOOWN is *supposed* to be moving (and it is), but this just has some great "driving with you mates while the sun's coming down" summer vibes to it, pure melancholic joy

But out of the two, I definitely prefer We're On Our Way Now so far. As I said earlier, the chorus of this tune feels like it's building to something, in a way that does get paid off the first time (the instrumental at 1:12 is genuinely fantastic) but then doesn't really go anywhere the second or third times. I do like the song overall, though. Gorgeous production and reminds me of a mix of the first album with While the Song Remains the Same. Backing vocals are really pretty, too.
