Why Blur?
Being in the first decade of my life in the 1990s, I missed out on the ware-fare between the two bands.
Of course I’ve done my reading, and do understand there was a class divide between Northern and Southern England. But I’m not sure how much of that I buy, and it especially doesn’t even nearly fully explain this phenomenon.
So I return to my original question: Why Blur?
The 1990s. An era saturated with fantastic bands. And while I don’t mind some of Blur’s work, by seriously competing with Oasis essentially makes Blur the second biggest British band during that time. I find that ridiculously hard to fathom. I would like answers.
Blur’s biggest accomplishment was being the sole serious competitor with the behemoth that is Oasis.
Provocative, troll like title. But not a provocative or troll like thread.

Cos they released an all time great album at EXACTLY the right moment and got the zeitgeist. Pretty much this, it was hit singles and critically acclaimed albums that other Britpop bands weren't consistently achieving. Might not have had the levels of number ones like Oasis but a lot of their songs starting with There's No Other Way got loads of radio time.

Apart from the silly comparisons in the press and all that, I don't understand the people who dimiss blur as being "just pop". Oasis are pretty much my favourite band but I think blur are the more interesting of the two. blur continued to change their sound on their self-titled album, 13 and then Think Tank. Oasis had a period of glory years from 1994-1997 where everything they did was gold but then they spent the rest of their career trying to imitate their own past.

I've never liked anything at all by Blur but it was a typical of the press to start all the Oasis Vs Blur crap. It was pretty pathetic really because both bands had their own success.

(Even if I’d add Oasis’ highs were way higher).

Blur was very popular in the UK even before Oasis released Definitely Maybe. And the gap in popularity between both bands only exploded the day "Wonderwall" was released. I remember seeing an Alan McGee interview where he says that the day Some Might Say got to number 1 in the UK, Blur were still "four times bigger " than Oasis. Of course it's an hyperbole but both bands had a similar level of popularity at that time, with Blur probably even having the biggest intertional hit with "Girls and Boys". Of course, it very soon changed after that

I'm not sure on that because I was never a fan of them. But I do know that song was released well before Oasis appeared on the scene.

Nah I don't think its drugs or anything like that, first of all he is getting older, and those youthful looks - although lasting longer than most people his age - couldn't last forever. And the lockdown has made most of the population stop getting haircuts and wear baggy clothes. Gorillaz had a fantastic year last year so career-wise he's doing great. Just the Sun trying to make something out of nothing.

He is person like everybody else and looks like regular guy early in the morning without makeup, reflectors and everything. Plus shitty haircut but it doesn't mean you are using drugs if you have shitty haircut xD

He likes the booze, no idea if he still takes drugs or not, but I wouldn't take hus appearance as the sign of anything, I believe he kinda likes looking "uncool" What's weird is how much he's been in the press for absolutely nothing lately, I wonder if something's about to come up

He just looks a bit tired/hungover. The lockdown hair and tatty clothing doesn't help but he's just popped out, so no biggie.

Well the Blur v Oasis thing was really stupid, there’s really no answer for that, both bands stoked the fire for publicity too.
Blur are without doubt the best band from that era. Parklife and the self titled are far better than anything Oasis made, in my opinion.
But opinions aside, it’s worth remembering Blur had already been having big singles and a huge album before Oasis had released one, so it’s not like they jumped on the success of Oasis, not do I believe Oasis were successful on the back of Oasis
well, I would say bands like Blur and Suede probably paved the way a year or two earlier for guitar bands like Oasis to enter the mainstream and making bands cool again.
The whole rivalry was just media garbage. Both top bands. Blur were better but If the music industry today I had 2 bands half as good as both of them, it would be much better

They are vastly overrated imho. A few great tunes, but not a great and distinctive sound and very irregular albums, if you ask me. I think Oasis' legacy is much stronger and the distance augments every year. Of course, I am talking about Oasis' peak period, but that is what history will remember

I would never listen to Blur because I felt like that would make me disloyal to oasis. But last year I got into them deep and have listened to all the albums/ B sides. I feel like they are a great singles band but some of the albums as a whole are tough to sit through. Not sure if that’s a common belief about them but that’s how I feel. And I think 13 is hugely overrated. And Great Escape era is underrated.
