As an American who loves guns, I would not be opposed to a strict ban on all semi-auto firearms. Frankly, I do not think we need guns at all for the most part, but as a means of compromise, I think bolt action rifles, single shot shotguns, and revolvers are all that should be allowed in citizens hands.
This preserves 2nd amendment rights, self defense, home protection, hunting and sporting. You just don't get to do it with semi-autos under my vision of the law.
Thanks for your honest and succinct reply. As somebody who lives in a country where nobody has guns, or aspires to own a gun, it’s always a bit mind blowing for me to hear views like this though. Two questions for you - why do you love guns? And why do you care so much about the 2nd amnmemdnent?

Two questions for you - why do you love guns? And why do you care so much about the 2nd amnmemdnent? Guns are fun. I don't own any firearms, but I still go to the gun range. Maybe it's the power or just the reward of seeing that target afterwards and how well you did. Likewise, archery is a lot of fun.
I don't give two shits for the 2nd Amendment. If I had my way, it would be abolished tomorrow by executive order. If that is even possible. Actually, I think it would require 2/3rds of a vote from congress to repeal. But I think you get my point.
Yeah, it doesn't matter if I like them or not. A hobby of mine is not worth somebody elses life. I'd give it up in a heartbeat. I don't need firearms for self defense or home protection and I loathe the act of hunting. My point was merely a compromise, because the alternative is scaring the right wingers into thinking you are after all of their guns. So a compromise keeps what they value intact while eliminating the worst threat among firearms. The semi-autos. A mass shooter just won't be as successful with a bolt action rifle or revolver or shotgun, generally speaking.
The reality is, I would not only support a banishment of all firearms, but an enforced banishment which involves the military going door to door and removing every firearm from every household with or without the citizens permission. That opinion infuriates the right wing into bold, borderline threatening proclamations of "From my cold dead fingers." Well, to be honest, it may be for the better if it turns out that way. The mindset is dangerous, clearly. And it's this same sub-type of person shooting up clubs, churches and crowds of people. There's a certain irony to those willing to kill to protect their right to kill. I call it mental instability.

I agree with The Invisible Sun, certain guns for home protection and sport/hunting....no need for anyone to own high-capacity weapons. I don't own weapons, find them odd, but understand some one wanting them for above reasons. God bless.

Guess what happened? The government of the day took steps to change gun legislation so everything as much as possible could be done to prevent this from happening again. Yes, you can still own a gun, ie farmers and stalkers etc can still own certain guns, however this is very very tightly controlled. I believe there are around 500 registered gun owners in Scotland - in a population of 5 million. The thought of just being able to walk into a high street store and buy a gun is bizarre to us.

Cheers for the reply. I kinda get now that in the US that the horse has already bolted but I still feel legislating is required to do something there. The number of mass shootings is insane.

A hobby of mine is not worth somebody elses life. I'd give it up in a heartbeat... This is what I don't understand. You say "a hobby of mine is not worth somebody eles life" yet you still go to the gun range. Those gun ranges and the companies that manufacture the guns you use there give millions of dollars every year to supporting the NRA and their fight to stop gun laws being strengthened. When you pay money at the gun range you're paying money towards the NRA and their lobbyists. If - as you say - you'd "give it up in a heartbeat" then why don't you when you know your hobby is already costing lives.

To be perfectly honest, a bunch of unarmed citizens scares me just as much as a bunch of over-armed citizens..... What's crime like in Scotland? I'm guessing the murder rate is low.....what about breaking and entering? Assault? Violent crime? God bless.

If - as you say - you'd "give it up in a heartbeat" then why don't you when you know your hobby is already costing lives. My gun range (or the only one I go to) is operated by my local police/sheriff force. All revenue, as far as I am aware, goes to supporting the police department, sheriffs station and city.
Regardless, that's like saying you're going to give up alcohol just because thousands drink themselves to death every year. Or you're gonna quit smoking because you don't want to support that industry which kills hundreds of thousands every year.
I am betting there is something in your life that you do that is actively harmful to the human body which you continue to do, despite it resulting in the death of many people. And maybe there is a small chance that you quitting whatever it might be would be beneficial in the long run for solving the health problem for others by refusing to support the industry, but even so, you still haven't quit. So if you can relate to that, then you can understand my perspective.
Fact of the matter is, it's legal and I like it. So I will partake until I can't. When I shoot weapons, I am surrounded by experts and in a controlled environment which in my opinion is the only environment in which citizens should ever be allowed to handle firearms.

I can't legally own firearms because I've been convicted of violent crimes, nor do I own weapons, never have...
Thanks.

Anyone who buys illicit drugs should probably think twice then, when you realize where your money is going. You’d all be part of the problem. So basically, any one who buys or sells illicit drugs is a WANKER.
“But, but, but....”

Actually, I last bought illegal drugs about 10 years ago......good ones, too. Not about the same drugs, but, I was thinking about this a bit ago: have you ever taken psychedelic drugs and kinda reset your mindset? Got your mind right.....You kinda buzz off that high and thinking for months, if not for a lifetime.....I need to do that again. Thanks.

I think everyone should do it at least once in their lifetime.

Sadly both gun crime and knife crime are both out of control even here in the UK it's been really bad for a very long time. Knife crime especially is just getting worse and worse. It's just horrible and I can never understand why someone would want to carry a gun or a knife.
