A late Jonny Wilkinson penalty earned a lacklustre British and Irish Lions side a draw against Argentina in Cardiff. The depleted Pumas had been expected to roll over, but Jose Nunez Piossek's try and Federico Todeschini's inspired boot earned them a deserved interval lead.
Wilkinson's international return, with flashes of skill and rust, helped the hosts rally, Ollie Smith touching down.
But the disjointed Lions had to wait until the very last kick, and rely on Wilkinson's boot, to avoid defeat.
Playing together for the first time, the fledgling Lions of 2005 struggled to gel throughout the match.
And they were punished as early as the fourth minute, Piossek darting down the right flank to touch down for the Pumas.
The unerring boot of Federico Todeschini stretched the lead to 13-0.
And five turnovers summed up the first quarter the spluttering Lions, who were badly out-scrummaged and out-jumped for large periods.
Indeed it took the hosts a full 17 minutes to open their account.
That score, at least, was encouraging, Wilkinson cannily drawing the defender before laying off to Ollie Smith, who surged under the posts with power and pace.
But they were fortunate to reach half-time only three points behind thanks to three trademark Wilkinson penalties.
A succession of second-half swaps by coach Sir Clive Woodward changed the personnel but not the momentum of the match and mistakes continued to mar the Lions play as they drove forward with increasing urgency.
And when Gordon D'Arcy spilled the ball deep in stoppage time, the Pumas looked set for an historic win.
Wilkinson duly stepped up spare the Lions' blushes.
But the moral victory was with Argentina, leaving Woodward with plenty to ponder as his team fly out to New Zealand on Wednesday.

Argentina 25 (19) Tries: Piossek Cons: Todeschini Pens: Todeschini 6

Rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward, the man who led England to a World Cup win over Australia has sent his congratulations to Rafael Benitez and Liverpool on winning the Champions League. Woodward is now coaching the British Lions rugby team as they arrived in Auckland to test their wits against New Zealand. Sir Clive and his players were cheering Liverpool on but they missed the penalty shoot-out because they had to board their plane. Sir Clive Woodward said: "I'd like to say a word of congratulations to Liverpool Football Club. The whole squad sat at the airport watching the game. Unfortunately the plane left when the game went into penalties! "To hear on the plane that Liverpool had won on penalties was just fantastic. I'd like to pass on the team's congratulations to Rafael Benitez and particularly Steven Gerrard, who I think is one of the world's greatest players. "I was reading all the hype leading into that game and there was some research done on the best colour to wear when you are playing competitive sport and it came out very clearly that winning teams wear red. "It was interesting to see Liverpool win, to see Arsenal beat Manchester United wearing red in the FA Cup at the weekend."

The Lions have named a strong side for their New Zealand tour opener against Bay of Plenty next Saturday. Experienced back-rowers Lawrence Dallaglio, Martyn Williams and Richard Hill start with Paul O'Connell locking an impressive Lions scrum with Ben Kay.
Captain Brian O'Driscoll is partnered in the centres by Wales' Gavin Henson.
Josh Lewsey comes in at full-back while Tom Shanklin and Mark Cueto are on the wings, but Jonny Wilkinson is missing as Ronan O'Gara starts at fly-half.
Henson's Wales team-mate Dwayne Peel, considered favourite for the Test scrum-half berth, takes the number nine jersey.
Lions head coach Sir Clive Woodward seemed eager to erase memories of last week's spluttering 25-25 draw against Argentina as he named several Test favourites in the side.
"There is a huge sense of excitement and anticipation now our first game in New Zealand is so close," said Woodward.
"Because it's the first game, Bay of Plenty will want to give us a very tough match and we have selected a very strong side who will give us a good start to the tour."
Cueto, who only joined the squad after Iain Balshaw withdrew injured from the tour, was delighted with his selection.
"I was thrilled to hear I was selected," said Cueto. "Just over a week ago I didn't think I'd be here at all.
"To be in the team for the first match of the Tour is fantastic. I can't wait to get out there."
O'Driscoll is also raring to go after being rested for the Lions' send-off against Argentina because Woodward felt it was important the tour captain leads the side out in Rotorua this Saturday.
"After all the waiting and the preparation it will be great to get out there and play the first match in New Zealand," said O'Driscoll.
"This is a strong side and we can't wait to get out in front of the New Zealand public and show what we can do on the rugby field."

O'Kelly ruled out of Lions tour
Irish lock Malcolm O'Kelly's Lions tour is over after he aggravated a groin injury in training on Wednesday. Lions medical staff were optimistic at first but after seeing a New Zealand specialist on Thursday, O'Kelly was ruled out of the tour.
England and Wasps lock Simon Shaw, 31, has been called into the 45-man squad as a straight replacement for O'Kelly.
"It's very sad for Mal. His attitude has been first class," said Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward.
"We spoke after he saw the specialist today and agreed there was no chance of him being fit enough to play and it was better for the tour if a replacement was called out."
Shaw, who has won 28 caps for England, was called up as a late injury replacement during the 2003 World Cup but the nearest he got to action was a place on the bench in the quarter-final victory over Wales.
He was also a member of the victorious 1997 Lions squad in South Africa but failed to make the test team.
Shaw, who was told as he prepared for Martin Johnson's Testimonial match this weekend, said: "I am absolutely delighted but feel for Mal and wish him well in his recovery.
"It is a great honour to be involved with the Lions, and to be honest it is all just sinking in but it will be fantastic to get out there and I am looking forward to the challenge that we will face in New Zealand."
O'Kelly, 30, strained an abdominal muscle in Cardiff before the squad's departure for New Zealand and missed the 25-25 draw with Argentina.
On Wednesday, he was dropped from the bench in favour of Donncha O'Callaghan for Saturday's tour opener as a "precautionary measure".
But the Auckland-based specialist revealed a more deep-rooted problem in his groin.
O'Kelly said: "I am obviously very disappointed that for me the tour is over.
"I have had this problem for a while but had managed to keep it at bay. I have to be philosophical and accept the judgement of the doctors.
"It is as well just to accept it and go home, and let the coaches and players get on with the job of trying to win the series against New Zealand.
"They are a great bunch and though I am sorry I will no longer be part of it, I wish them all the best."
O'Kelly, Ireland's most-capped player with 73 appearances for his country, started three matches and played a fourth as a replacement on the Lions' 2001 tour of Australia.
He scored one try against Queensland President's XV in Townsville.
Lions captain Brian O'Driscoll said: "All of us, but perhaps most of all Mal's Irish team-mates, are obviously saddened at the news.
"We've known about his injury but like him hoped it would not flare up like this. It is typical of Mal that he has taken it in the spirit he has."
Lions doctor James Robson did have good news regarding Scottish loose-forward Simon Taylor, who he expects to make a full recovery from his hamstring injury.
"In days gone by that may have ruled him out of the tour," said Robson, who has the luxury of a five-strong back-up team, including another doctor and four physios.
"But he has done twice daily rehab conditioning work with Stuart Barton, one of our physios, and he is now at the point where he is opening up to do some sprint work.
"Simon has worked extremely hard and will be available for selection shortly."
Robson also admitted that the medical team has already been busy but insisted the tour party was in "exceptional health".
"Thirty-eight (of the 43 players on tour) have so far had treatment from the medical team," he said.
"We are averaging 30 hands-on treatments a day.
"We are providing intensive rehab for three players on a one-to-one basis each day.
"We are heavily involved in pre-hab. You will be aware of the recent injury audit which says 40% of injuries occur in training.
"Those numbers do not worry me at all. A lot of the guys have chronic bad backs, chronic hip problems - we are dealing with things that are ongoing problems.
"It does not mean the tour party is falling apart. In actual fact, the tour party is in exceptional health.
"It is exceptional to find a player who does not have one niggle or another.
"And we have seven, if my calculations are correct, who have no niggles at all."

Bay of Plenty 20-34 Lions
The Lions made a winning start to their tour of New Zealand by beating Bay of Plenty 34-20, but victory was tarnished by an injury to Lawrence Dallaglio. The tourists were pushed hard by the home side in Rotorua and went in level at 17-17 at half-time.
But their attacking play proved decisive as they ran in six tries, with two from England wing Josh Lewsey.
Dallaglio was stretchered off after 20 minutes and is believed to have dislocated his ankle.
Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward will have been pleased with his side's attacking potency after their lucky draw against Argentina two weeks ago.
Lewsey, centre Gavin Henson and scrum-half Dwayne Peel were particularly lively, but there were missed tackles in defence and fly-half O'Gara was less than clinical with his kicking, slotting only two from six.
The Lions made a scintillating start, racing into a 17-0 lead after just 11 minutes, and O'Gara was to the fore, standing flat and marshalling his back line with great skill.
He set up Lewsey for the opening try after two minutes, the England wing finishing clinically after O'Driscoll confused the Bay defence with a decoy run.
Lewsey quickly added a second after taking a long pass from Henson and Mark Cueto grabbed a third with his first touch of the game when, unmarked on the right wing, he gathered a clever cross-field punt from O'Gara.
The home side barely knew what had hit them, but they managed to claw their way back with a try from back-row forward Colin Bourke.
O'Gara this time showed the weaker side of his game, missing a tackle on Mili Latu in the run-up to the score.
And Lions' woes increased when Dallaglio was stretchered off after turning his ankle going into a tackle.
The enforced delay seemed to inhibit the visitors and they were on the back foot for much of the rest of the half.
Bay fly-half Murray Williams, who impressed with his running and kicking, slotted a penalty and then went over for a try after a neat side-step to send the sides in level at 17-17 at half-time.
The game was in the balance at the interval, but the Lions managed to recover their composure and seize control.
O'Gara threw a long pass to send Tom Shanklin over after 52 minutes and a clever break by scrum-half Peel put the result of the match beyond doubt.
The fly-half slotted the conversion, but his rate of two successful kicks from six attempts will not have impressed Woodward.

Injury set to end Dallaglio tour
Lawrence Dallaglio's Lions tour is almost certainly over after the Wasps number eight suffered a serious ankle injury against Bay of Plenty. The 32-year-old was stretchered off after 20 minutes of the Lions' 34-20 win in Rotorua and taken to hospital.
Ireland forward Simon Easterby has been called out as a replacement.
Sir Clive Woodward said: "He (Dallaglio) looks to have a dislocated ankle. I can't see any way he can take a further part in the tour."
Dallaglio's injury is a huge blow to the Lions, as the former England captain is one of their most experienced players and has been in superb form for Wasps this season.
And it is a particularly cruel blow for the player, who was flown home early from the 2001 Lions tour to Australia because of a career-threatening knee injury.
Woodward added: "We're all gutted for him and it's taken the shine off what was a great game of rugby."
Easterby, captain of Welsh regional side Llanelli Scarlets, is expected to arrive in New Zealand in the next couple of days.
