If they did, then when, where and how?

The rock n roll stories look fascinating from a distance, but if they did throw it away, it wasn’t through any sense of heady recklessness - it was through mind numbingly boring and tedious albums they released in the 2000s. I’d have more respect for them in the 2000s if they ramped it up in the studio (or kept repeating Be Here Now levels of excess) but the reality is it was all very tepid in the end.
