Forgot to mention Dead In The Water - not really sure how because for me personally it is up there with Half The World Away and Talk Tonight as his acoustic masterpiece.
For sure, it does use the same old tropes with Noel rehashing chords that he’s used time and time again, but this one really hit the target. I love the vulnerable vocals and vulnerable lyrics, I love the recording - raw and spontaneous, and the echo on the vocals really heighten that sense of isolation. I see it as the perfect end to the album even if it is a complete u-turn stylistically as it goes back to the tried and tested. Takes the listener back into the real world from the psychedelic care free journey of the preceding album and offers a chance for self-reflection and contemplation.
I know everyone doesn’t feel the same about the song but from the feeling I got when first on hearing, it was the same strength of emotion that got me hooked to those Oasis classics. Maybe it’s just one of those songs that captures you at a certain time in your life and resonates so strongly with the accumulation of life experience and where you are at that moment in time - and for some maybe it just isn’t of the moment, but whatever the case, for a song to package something like that in 5 minutes and make someone feel that way is still something extraordinary whether you like the song or not.
I don’t care if some snobs throw the old cliche about Noels songs that ‘the lyrics are shit’ or ‘the song is childish in simplicity’ - that’s the great thing about music, it is inexplicable how it can affect you, and that’s the way it should be just like any form of magic, and if you’re too caught up in ‘artistic merit’ or whatever then I can only feel sorry for those people that put their egotistical ideas of ‘intelligence’ above heart and emotion.
I resign myself to the fact he’s not going to write songs as good as that all the time because they are just so rare to come by.

Beautifully put, mate - captures the sentiments I have towards the song perfectly For me, I knew it'd be one of those songs when I heard a snippet of it in a radio interview before the album came out - the kind that makes you stop what you're doing and listen and at the end of it, that small part sticks with you wherever you go. I find it slightly ironic that as much as Noel says Who Built The Moon? is a 'happy' album, he places a bonus track that is the opposite of this claim in feel and lyrics - somewhere between heartbreak and hope. Lucky for us that he did place it, as it's something that very few artists can replicate |

In terms of official releases it would be one of: While The Song Remains The Same Fort Knox Dead In The Water The Right Stuff Alone On The Rope Named dropped it for possible inclusion on Don’t Believe The Truth I believe, likewise with songs like Lord Don’t Slow Me Down, there were a hell of a lot of better songs lying around than some of the stuff that ended up on the album. But then the idiots that they are decided to put turds like A Bell Will Ring on instead, thus ruining a potentially good album. And then there’s Keep The Dream Alive - a song that sounds like it was part of a Blue Peter competition for kids to write a song for the forthcoming Oasis album. |
