NFL playoff scenarios
Playoff clinching scenarios for Week 17.
AFC East
• The Patriots have clinched the AFC East.
AFC North
• The Bengals have clinched the AFC North.
• The Steelers can clinch a playoff spot with: 1. A win 2. A Chiefs loss or tie 3. A Chargers win (note: although Chargers have been eliminated, if they win vs. Broncos and they, the Chiefs and the Steelers all finish at 10-6, you would break division ties first. Chargers would win tiebreaker vs. Chiefs based on common opponents [8-4 vs 7-5] and that would eliminate the Chiefs. They would then go to tiebreaker vs. Steelers, which Pittsburgh would win based on its head-to-head win vs. Chargers).
AFC South
• The Colts have clinched the AFC South, a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the AFC.
• The Jaguars have clinched a playoff spot.
AFC West
• The Broncos have clinched the AFC West and a first-round bye.
• The Chiefs can clinch a playoff spot with: 1. A win and a Steelers loss and a Chargers loss or tie.

Alexander's final goal has ring to it
By DANNY O'NEIL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER
So what's next, Shaun Alexander?
You equaled the league's single-season touchdown record Saturday, broke your franchise mark for rushing yards in a season and extended your lead in the league's rushing race to 150 yards.
Is there anything left to achieve in the regular-season finale at Green Bay on Sunday?
"How many yards are we away from 2,000?" he asked.
He was told 193.
"Hopefully we can get that in one drive," he said.
He smiled. The assembled reporters laughed. It seems Alexander's optimism is as unstoppable as his rushing success. He has run for 1,807 yards despite not playing much of the fourth quarter in three different blowouts. It's the 16th time in league history a player has surpassed 1,800 yards.
So what now?
Seattle's playoff positioning was secured with Saturday's victory, but it's not quite true to say there's nothing left for the Seahawks to earn in the regular season. They have set franchise marks for victories, points and touchdowns, but still have more than half a dozen team records that could be broken.
But instead of projecting how much further this team might go, it's worth a moment to pause and look at how far Alexander has come since last season, when everyone remembers how important a 1-yard run from the goal line turned out to be. It was the margin Alexander lost the rushing title by, and afterward he said he felt as if he had been stabbed in the back, a reference to coach Mike Holmgren's call for a quarterback sneak.
It's a tension that doesn't get mentioned this season.
"Last year was made more dramatic than it really was to me and Mike," Alexander said.
But the perceived sourness was contrasted by the sweetness of this season's home finale, when the second-largest crowd in stadium history rumbled for Alexander until he came running out for one final play.
When he came out, everyone cheered.
"It was something as an offensive line that we really wanted," center Robbie Tobeck said.
Alexander had been told his game was over with about five minutes to play. Then came a turnover by Craig Terrill and two runs by Maurice Morris. Suddenly, Seattle had the ball at the Colt 1 with 4 minutes left, putting Alexander on the doorstep of history.
Holmgren said his first concern was to avoid the appearance of running up the score, although Seattle was ahead by only 15 points.
"He has done everything we asked him to do and more," Holmgren said. "I didn't want him to miss out, if I could help it, like he did last year."
Before Alexander jogged onto the field, Holmgren stopped him. Holmgren said he told Alexander that if he got hurt, the coach would never speak to him again.
Alexander said the coach said he had one play and joked he wouldn't visit him in the hospital if he were to be injured.
Then Alexander came striding out for one run at history.
"The crowd was so loud; it was awesome," he said.
After he scored, he wasn't the only one celebrating. Guard Steve Hutchinson found him in the end zone and put an arm around him.
"It's a hard-fought deal down there on the goal line, so for us to punch it down in there all those times, we take as much pride in that as Shaun does," Hutchinson said.
One more touchdown and Alexander will have one of the most fundamental records in football. But that wasn't the first thing on Alexander's mind when he was asked what was left to earn this season.
His initial answer?
"I still go golfing with Marshall Faulk, and he carries that Super Bowl ring with him everywhere he goes," Alexander said.
That's the prize his eyes are on.
By the numbers
1
TDs needed by Shaun Alexander to reach 100 in his career and become the 18th player to reach that plateau.
2
TDs needed by Alexander to match Steve Largent's career franchise record.
2
Games in 2005 in which Alexander rushed for four TDs, making him the second player in history, following Jim Taylor (1962), to do so in the same season.
4
Players in NFL history who have scored 20 or more TDs in back-to-back seasons. Alexander joins Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk and Priest Holmes.
4
Players in NFL history have two scoring runs of 88 yards or longer at some point in their careers.
5
Consecutive seasons in which Alexander has scored at least 15 TDs, making him the only player to accomplish that feat.
9
Consecutive divisional 100-yard rushing games by Alexander, the longest streak since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970.
16
Players in league history who have rushed for more than 1,800 yards in a season.
18
TDs by Alexander in Seattle's first 10 games, the most by any player in the first 10 games of any season in pro football history.
27
TDs by Alexander (26 rushing, one receiving) in 2005, a total that matches the NFL record he now shares with Holmes (2003).
99
TDs by Alexander since 2001, the most in the NFL over the past five years.
150
Lead, in yards, that Alexander (1,807) has over Tiki Barber (1,657) of the Giants in the race for the rushing title with one game left.
BROKEN RECORD
The Seahawks have already set three very fundamental team records, and are on pace to rewrite a few other franchise marks:
Already Broken
2005 total Previous record Victories, 13 12, 1984 Points, 435 418, 1984 Touchdowns, 55 51, 1984
In striking distance
2005 total Team record Total yards, 5,670 5,818, 2003 Rushing yards, 2,359 2,394, 1978 Road victories, 5 5, 1984 Rushing TDs, 28 28, 1978
On pace to break
2005 total Team record Fewest times intercepted, 9 9, 1994 Fewest fumbles, 16 21, 1982 Fewest rushing TDs allowed, 4 4, 1991 Fewest rush yards allowed, 1,442 1,461, 1982
TOUCHDOWN TORRENT
Shaun Alexander tied the NFL record for touchdowns in a season (27) on Saturday when he scored three times (two rushing, one receiving) in the Seahawks' victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Alexander can claim the record outright -- he shares it with Priest Holmes -- on Sunday in Green Bay.
