That was the fucking tits! I somehow managed to avoid spoilers this time. I had no idea whatsoever that Tarkin played a significant role and that Vader would really be let off the leash so to speak. Got to be up there with ESB that. Enjoyed all the new characters, watching Krennic and Tarkin argue was magnificent. I saw it at a shitty cinema so it was only 1080p and the Tarkin CGI looked amazing 99% of the time, I do wonder if it'll hold up when I see it on a 4k screen though. I do think they made him a little too expressive though, those eyebrows were up and down like a *insert funny metaphor here*-too blown away to be funny. Just really wish we got to see more of Vaders castle, a closer look at him in the bacta tank and seeing him get suited up would have been epic. I also absolutely love the idea of him being a glass canon that spends most of his time meditating in a fish bowl but suits up and terrorises rebels when needed. Awesome! I've only seen it once but I'd say it's safely an 8/10, maybe 9 I have to admit I'm not really hyped about a Han Solo movie and I honestly couldn't care less about the Boba Fett one. I really wish we could somehow get a Vader/Sidious centric film set shortly after ROTS before JEJ and Mcdiarmid get too old or pass away. I'd be more excited for a film like that than anything else. Fingers crossed! Boba Fett movie I simply don't give a shit about. His character and cool backstory was robbed from us by Attack of The Clones. Now he is so boxed in in what you can do with him. Plus he's just a stupid clone. Argh! The Han Solo movie I'm totally pumped for. Great cast already (Ehrenreich, Glover, Clarke), great screenwriter (Kasdan) and creative director team (Lord and Miller). I trust all those people involved. They just need to set it 10-12 years before A New Hope. Shooting starts in February. Lets get it!!!!! That's exactly why I'm not bothered about it. I feel like I've seen that characters back story and it left a bad taste in my mouth. It's sad such a wonderful franchise has those ugly two episodes (I really like ROTS, despite it's many obvious to even me flaws, don't judge!)lurking in the background. The Han Solo movie is set up to be good for the reasons you mentioned and I'm expecting it to be decent but I'm just not that interested in Han's back story so even though I'm sure i'll like the film, i'm not counting down the days like i did with E7 and R1. Not that i'm complaining, as a Star Wars fan I feel so fucking privileged at the moment. Like when DGSS, HFB and BE were released so close together I felt spoilt rotten as an Oasis fan but I do wish they were taking a different direction with the spin offs and I'd kill to see one focusing on the Empire and Dark side. A Baze and Chirrut movie would also be extremely welcome!

I found it quite enjoyable, particularly the ending (wow!), but I enjoyed the force awakens a great deal more.
But I must say, the CGI for Tarken and <won't say as possible spoillleer> was utterly sublime. CGI to a level I have never seen.

Let's be honest............Krennic and his death troopers didn't really do much all movie. Krennic just complained the whole time. He was very underused. Originally I expected the death troopers to be this elite force called upon the hunt down the rebels who stole the plans one by one. Turns out they were just body guards that didn't do much. Just like Boba Fett and Captain Phasma.

The first time those guys showed up on Scarif they really made an impression though - mowed down the rebels who had been easily fending off Stormtroopers until then. Of course they can't look good against main characters, but they were a good deal more efficient than everything else the Empire has. As for the Han Solo movie, my main hope is that they take it into a completely new direction. Rogue One had no Jedi, but apart from that, much of it was classic Star Wars with a darker tone. A movie focussed on Han Solo's life as a smuggler would have no Jedi or Sith, no space battles or anything else that big...more like a gangster movie.

i love redlettermedia, but thats probably the second time i dont agree with them (mike liked jurassic world which i thought was apeshit). a lot of these points are too much in my opinion. unnecessary hate. its a good star wars WAR-movie and its not the fan pleasing shit show that was TFA. they tried too hard on that one.

"Tried too hard" is redlettermedia's credo. Even their popular Phantom Menace review brings up some seriously ridiculous point to discredit the movie instead of just attacking the many points where the movie deserves to be attacked.

Didn't watch the review but I'm seeing an increasingly ridiculous trend among reviewers online about the undercooked character development. Have these people seen Saving Private Ryan? Have they played the original Halo games? Character development is almost non existent for the characters in the story but what makes them memorable is their contribution and emotional impact to the story (one which has greater emphasis than the characters themselves). We didn't need sweeping backstories on Jyn, Cassian, Base and Chirrut, or K-2SO. They had memorable performances and you learn really quick what kind of characters they are. Where were these complaints for the Force Awakens with Finn, Rey and Poe? We didn't get extensive information on them either, we're just thrown into the story. I think a Han Solo spin off film is a bad idea. The spin offs should be about characters separate for the original trilogy and their own unique stories in the star wars universe. Disney could do so much with the license that promotes orginial storytelling but instead insist on marketing and producing films based solely on the original trilogy so the revenue stream is tightly maintained. I hope Episode 8 takes Star Wars places it hadn't gone before like Rogue One, if that will catch everyone's attention. The internet has made everyone some damn picky these days!

The Empire could really do with setting up some kind of panel to peer review Death Star plans ✌️

I found it a better film than the Force Awakens. The Tarkin CGI was good but no better than the models in the cutscenes for the Battlefield 1 game that came out in October. Not going to spoil but the other cgi character at the end had very wierd looking eyes and threw me off. Biggest advantage this movie has over TFA was it didn't bludgeon you with nolstalgia, the parts of the film that meld with A New Hope perfectly was great, especially explaining how their was a weakness in the Death Star which many fans had questions for. The omninity of the force also gave it more weight whereas in The Force Awakens it was kind of used as a nolstalgia crutch. It really felt like a more grounded story in this universe rather than one that relied on comic relief. Seeing a certain character from the prequels in this as well helped connect the saga better too and was nice to see. Tbh I never understood the questions about the 2m exhaust port in ANH. If you think about it, having that small a port on a space station the size of a moon is a feat of engineering, and needed Luke(one of the most natural force users ever) to blow it up. It did make for an excellent movie tho!

Bloody crap. Hated it. Couldn't wait for it to end.
Unless they make a story about Obi-Wan with Ewan McGregor in it, I doubt I'll be catching any more of these Anthology films when they hit cinemas.

Bloody crap. Hated it. Couldn't wait for it to end. Unless they make a story about Obi-Wan with Ewan McGregor in it, I doubt I'll be catching any more of these Anthology films when they hit cinemas. What did you hate about it? Pretty much everything. The corny dialogue ( "I am one with the Force. The Force is with me"). The uninspired acting performances. The clichés (Forest Whittaker's "leave me, save yourselves" moment; Felicity Jones seeing her father just in time for his slow death scene (in the fucking rain!); and so on). The comic relief bits that fell flat. The tedious callbacks to previous films ("It's a trap!"). The scenes where Stormtroopers got beaten up with sticks again. The even more irritatingly ludicrous moment when a single farting little Rebel ship pushed a whole fucking Star Destroyer into the path of another whole fucking Star Destroyer, with the ease at which one might shunt a Reliant Robin off an icy country road, to bring on yet another CGI orgy of destruction. The bland characters. The repetitive X-wing/TIE fighter battle sequences. Vader's suit looking odd... The only bit of the film I did like, was when they killed off everyone at the end, and Vader rampaged through the Rebel ship. A sad (although not really for me, because I wasn't in any way engaged in the characters) ending was exactly what the film needed, I think. And setting up the opening scene of the original film was clever. However, even that was undermined, when they crowbarred CGI Leia in at the end (was that really necessary? We knew where it was going. They could've just left it with the shot of that soldier holding that disc we got about 10 close-ups of, up to a figure in white). Tarkin, I'll let them off, because their hands were tied, really - he was, after all, fairly important to the plot. And he did look pretty good (if still a little unnatural), while he was standing still. But with Leia, I don't think they were quite so successful. Big call, on the behalf of the director, to end the movie on that artificial shot, but I sorta wish he...hadn't. To be honest. I don't think it worked. And I wonder whether if when people watch the film back in 10 years time, it'll be like watching one of Pierce Brosnan's Bond films now - "did that look believable at the time?"

Saw it yesterday and I was pretty disappointed. Too formulaic and too contrived a plot for my liking.
Also, two pages and nobody mentioned how criminally underused Donnie Yen was in this movie? I don't know how familiar you guys are with Hong Kong cinema, but when you've got an actor who's capable of scenes like the one below and you sideline his character, I think you've got some serious missed potential. I guess the idea of Donnie Yen as a Jedi is more appealing than the execution for the same reason as the idea of Samuel L. Jackson as a Jedi is appealing.

And I wonder whether if when people watch the film back in 10 years time, it'll be like watching one of Pierce Brosnan's Bond films now - "did that look believable at the time?" I went into the movie with very low expectations, assuming it to be a quick knock off to keep interest before E8. Watching it in the theatre, I quite enjoyed it. Like the last one, it felt like Star Wars. But also, like the last one, the more I thought about it, the more i felt the same way you did. I still enjoyed the movie to a point, but I think the criticisms are very valid. They played it way too safe last time, and this time was better, but the characters seemed awfully familiar. I would like to watch the prequels again, with a fresh mind, now that the new ones are out. Its obvious how badly the CGI over reliance was with those films, and they had more than their share of flaws, but (at least with The Phantom Menace) there was merit. I think the Obi Wan/Quigon relationship was terrific and the actors played them in a way that really made you care about those characters. The boy they found for Anakin was a perfect counterpoint to the big villain Darth Vader becomes, and there were some other decent characters. They had a great villain in Darth Maul, and I liked how they introduced the Emperor's role as a senator. The realization of the film in many ways left something to be desired but this one could have been a pretty great chapter in the SW saga.

Saw it today in Dbox 3d. Amazing. Loved it. Much better than than The Force Awakens. It felt like a Star Wars movie, even without Jedi's. Great performances. Good dialogue for the most part. The action felt necessary, rather than forced as it did in TFA.
I'm not going to say there aren't cringy scenes. I hated Darth Vader's line of dialogue about Krennic's choking aspirations. I hated Saw Gerreras needless and cliche death as theyknowwhatimean accurately pointed out.
It was its own movie and that's all I can really ask for. It had the right amount of references to the other films and managed to even tug at my emotions as it ended for a few of the characters.
I think this one is already a classic, worthy to sit next to the originals.
Also, that space battle. Definitely better than ROTJ's space battle.

The way they edited out most of Saw's scenes kinda made the character pointless and a complete waste of time. Especially with Whitteker playing he role. That part of the film needed a cleanup. I'd rather have spent more time learning about the Rogue squad. We barely knew their names outside Jyn, Cassian or K2.

No rolling intro. That was dissapointing. The CGI is no problem, like they usually say In The big bang theory, Lucas will keep changing effects so he can release new versions. Yes, i know it's Disney now, but they've got the same spirit. X-wings are the coolest ship ever, no doubt about it. I loved those battles. About the reminiscences, you gotta think there are 8 movies, with some more planned, plus all those cartoons, comics, etc etc. Some elements have to be present all along the work. It' like classical music (or OST), there are parts repeated to keep some unity. I'm marveling over the Tarkin CGI but I also want to point out the amazing CGI work done on K2-SO. I totally forgot he was a digital character until this morning. He looks as real as 3PO or R2. Really? Aw man, the Tarkin one was ok, but this one is huge!! I hadn't noticed! Hayden Christensen. Enough said. Worst casting ever. He completely ruined the birth of Vader moment
