Here's why he didn't get the gig (from Peter Hook's 'Inside New Order') :

Trouble was Potts is an excellent guitarist/bassist/keyboard player as well as a producer but was too much his own man for Noel- I've said it before many times but I would have taken him on guitars/keyboards and Julian Taylor on bass guitar every time over Gem and Andy. Ah well.......

You touch my amp when I'm not around and you're getting fired immediately. Potts may have had the talent, but you gotta be a team player before you can pull the, someone isn't being a team player card

Andy and Gem get a load of unfair stick IMO. Turn Up The Sun and To Be Where There's Life are two of Oasis' best post-2000 songs, and Thankyou For The Good Times is a great b-side. It is what it is. Noel was the leader and he played into that. It had got them so far and he wasn't going to change then. Andy and Gem are sound in my book. Just as Bonehead and Guigs are - and they are equally all as much a part of Oasis' history as anybody else.

Oh fucking hell. Here we go again... I don't care how talented the guy was, you don't saunter in on your first session with a mega-selling rock band and suggest they change the chords to their most famous song. That's bang out of order. And yes, I'm sure Noel is a dreadful megalomaniac, and I'm absolutely certain it would've benefited the band enormously if someone somewhere down the line had been able to bring him down a peg; but to go over and turn his amp down while his back is turned, after it's been made clear you're not to, that's just not the way to go about it. I'm glad he didn't get the job. If he'd pulled a stunt like that where Liam had been the one on the receiving end, he'd've probably got his head kicked in.

Many bands would welcome a new band member with fresh ideas, especially after a record that has been dismissed by critics. But then again, we're talking about Oasis here and not any usual band....

Name me one mega-selling rock band that would welcome a newcomer into the fold who brought in such "fresh ideas" as ripping up the band's most famous song and writing new chords for it, and telling the band's most talented member to turn his instrument down. It's not just Oasis that'd take umbrage at that, EVERY band would. And let's not forget, Be Here Now wasn't always dismissed by critics. The response it received was overwhelmingly positive at first. And even when the tide of public opinion started to turn somewhat, they were still able to tour the world with it, selling out massive great arenas and the like. The only really dismal thing that was happening to Noel in the late 90s, that might've made him need a fresh pair of ears to come in and help him out a bit, was him trying to kick cocaine by replacing it with prescription drugs.

Well this is only Peter Hook's version of events, although in fairness it sounds like something Potts would do Also changing the arrangement of Wonderwall didn't stop Noel loving it with Ryan Adams' version later so... By the time David Potts was auditioned for the band 'Be Here Now' was two years old and the backlash as well as Noel's prescription use had already begun in earnest. They were able to tour the UK in arenas no problem but they had Australian and North American dates undersold throughout the tour although IIRC Europe sold well, so it wasn't an all conquering tour but it was a chaotic one. I agree that it wasn't from the book of 'Great Interview Techniques' but I think it was useful for both parties in a way, Oasis for seeing Potts wasn't a yes man which is essentially what they (or Noel) wanted at that point, and Potts for seeing that the band were not open to newcomers with musical ideas. Don't forget at the time of the SOTSOG tour rumours in the industry were rife that Noel was done with the band, Andy and Gem were on session contracts until the tour end, etc. It was only Gem in particular chipping away at Noel after the summer festivals and Wembley 2000 that led him back to the idea of making another Oasis record. Unfortunately that record was 'Heathen Chemistry' but I'm sure Gem had good intentions when he put the ideas into Noel's head

I agree that changing the chords for Wonderwall doesn't sound like a good idea and I can't think of any example were another band did anything similar. However there have been several cases were a new band member brought new ideas and a new sound to a band or helped to develop it (David Gilmour and John Frusciante come to mind). Of course Noel was only searching for a new bass player but the whole story shows that he was maybe a bit narrow-minded and didn't want anybody but him to influence Oasis' sound. Unfortunately, once he allowed it, there were the wrong members in the band.

I agree. If any band needed a right good royal kicking up the arse, it was Oasis in the 2000s. Why would anyone with any self-respect allow such a great band like Oasis to wallow in shite by bringing in Andy and Gem with the dross they served up on record? Noel built Oasis, and then he destroyed it. An absolute waste of Liam's vocals too.

I've only now heard of this somehow. I always thought it was the illegal kind only. Fuckin' hell.
