I'm curious to know this. What aggravated Robbie to challenge Liam to a fight at the Brits 2000? I know Noel had referred him to 'the fat dancer from Take That' after Liam/Robbie had a friendship (also I'm pretty sure you can hear Robbie near the end of the cover of Cum On Feel the Noize, although I could be wrong), but I understood that comment had happened 2-3 years beforehand. Did Liam say something in the press? etc.

Might have something to do with the fact Liam started dating Nicole, who was Robbie's ex. I believe Noel was involved in it somehow as well, putting some fuel to the fire or something, or have I dreamt that?

I like that description, because it shows how childish it all apparently was. >But the romance didn't last long, souring when big brother Noel put an end to their antics. Like a jealous child who wanted his toy back, Noel declared that Williams was a just a "fat dancer from Take That" – from which point Liam, it appeared, was not allowed to come out to play.<

It was initially over a comment by Noel who referred to Robbie as a 'fat dancer from Take That' , which Noel claimed was taken out of context where he was discussing Oasis impact on people they associated with, and in fairness Robbie was close to being kicked out of TT for personal issues anyway, but his sacking for the Glastonbury 1995 appearance gave him credibility in some areas of the music business. This event enabled him to meet Guy Chambers who co-wrote the bulk of his 1997-2000 material that made him a solo success. Dollowing on from Robbie taking Noel's comment badly he referred to the Oasis guitarist as a 'nasty, mean spirited little dwarf'. Noel for his part ignored this but a public slanging march via the press (pre sicial media kids! ) ensued between Liam and Robbie over this, cumilating in the Brut Awards speech by Robbie, who was probably under the influence of alcohol and maybe more. The Q awards at the same year saw Liam dedicate rhe Q to Robbie in the meaning of 'Queer' a reference possibly to Williams' then publicly duscussed but not confirmed sexual orientation BBC Oct 2000 Robbie left the ceremony without any real comment about this, although Noel was quoted as saying Liam was in 'fine form with a suit in the boot in case of court', and went on to discuss Liam and Robbie's spat on this segment of the Frank Skinner Show Mean Mrs. Mustard is right that whilst Liam was with Robbie's ex Nicole there was always tension, particularly in 2002 when she publicly stated that she had aaborted a child conceived with Williams Herald Scotland Oct 2002 Robbie claimed to know nothing of this, but provoked Liam's ire once more by attempting to contact her about it- relations remain frosty to say the least to this day from that point on.

Oh I remember this one. I was amused at the way writers often use "Bez" as if it's some sort of term.

Also there is a story in 2000 about Robbie that he sent a letter to Noel with not so good words about SOTSOG, it was something like this.

NME 2000Forgot about that- it was a wreath with a note saying "To Noel Gallagher RIP. Heard your latest album, with deepest sympathies Robbie Williams". Liam publicly threatened to break Robbie's nose over this, which led to Robbie's Brit Awards speech challenge.

I came across the same source when searching for something I was sure I had read somewhere, Liam complaining about Williams slagging off his band and Noel (defending Noel is pretty funny, if you think about it): news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/1000246.stm[Liam] added: "I don't dislike him, I don't hate him, I just think he's rubbish. "If he slags my band off, he slags my girlfriend and he slags my brother off, I'll have him." I also read somewhere that Williams made some crude remarks about Nicole Appleton on stage, but that might have been later, after she disclosed the abortion? popdirt.com/robbie-williams-says-screw-you-to-nicole-appleton/9331/Ah, well, "according to The Sun".

Daily Telegraph 2002They quoted the same as The Sun that 'Sexed Up' is about Nicole, so he probably did say it at the special taping. The only bit of Rhe Sun there I would say "bullshit" is the part that the audience were 'shocked', unless they mean there were the sort of people in it who complained abot Jonathan Ross and Ruasell Brand despite not actually having heard the broadcast call to Andrew Sachs- Laurence Howarth Guardian 2008 made the point that if people were offended themselves and not on behalf of the mob, they would have rung in after hearing the show having been listening to it at the rime, rathwr than a week or so later as many complainants seemed to do.

They (or at least Noel) were still on good terms with him in February 1996 as Noel interviewed him on a GLR show he guest-hosted.

Didn't Robbie also cover Stand By Me and put a thanks to Oasis in his first album which was 97/98. I think the first "tubby-arsed Williams" and "fat dancer" quotes were 1999-ish.

I think it is amazing that Robbie probably outsold Oasis globally between 2000 and 2009.

Thanks so much for all this info. I love learning more about the history of the band, so cheers to everyone's input here who answered. Didn't Oasis also have something to do/have a spat with Kylie Minogue in 2000 or so?

Ha, yes, was just thinking about this "feud" the other night while watching my Glastonbury 95 DVD and seeing Robbie Williams dancing on stage during Shakermaker.
Yeah, basically Noel was doing an interview I think in the run up to the release of SOTSOG and the interviewer put it to him that Oasis had gone from a band of the people to hanging round with the likes of Kate Moss and Robbie Williams.
Noel, obviously annoyed that someone was challenging his working class credentials, replied that when Robbie started knocking round with them he was "just a fat dancer from Take That". If all kicked off from there.

That fan cam footage of Williams dancing drunkenly on stage at Glastonbury (I think?) is pretty cringe worthy, what a tag along that guy was.

Robbie always had weight problems, so he took that Noel remark personal.
Robbie solo had some Oasis influencies, mainly on his early years, Angel is a bit Oasis-ish, Come Undone sounds like pop version of some lost Oasis song.

I quite liked his first solo album tbh. That title song, Life thru a lens, although very similar in sentiment to Pulp's Common People, has some pretty good lyrics... Now, if you think that that was the first solo album from an ex boy band member nowadays... guess it would be considered 'outrageous, radical, subversive'.... back then, it was just 'Robbie Williams' first solo record'... God, I miss the 90s, great times!!

Or maybe not...;-) I don't know anything about Guy Chambers (or indeed RW), all I'm thinking is that there is no way a 'professional songwriter' could 'get away' with writing lyrics like that these days, let alone help the 'act' the song was written for become the biggest selling male singer or whatever RW was at the time? On another note... How great would it be if somehow, i.e. in an alternative universe, Liam suddenly came back with a song of political / social influence?! In a seemingly endless sea of meaningless music, what a comeback that would be!!
