Be interested to hear what the good folks of Live4ever make of this.
All things being equal - which was the better gig?
That is, if Kurt didn't decided to turn his head into pencil (ie. fill it with lead) shortly afterwards, would the Nirvana Unplugged still be heralded in the same vein that it is now.
Obviously, you can level the playing field for this question in a more morbid fashion... but feck that.

I got the Nirvana Unplugged LP at home. I have to say, it's an amazing concert & I personally think it's better than the Oasis unplugged in 1996.
Maybe if Liam would have turned up...
I like the acoustic gigs Noel did a while ago better then the Oasis unplugged.

Nirvana, no contest here for me. It is just beautiful and I feel it changed the way people perceived them, those that did not necessarily like Grunge anyway or it opened them up to Nirvana. Quite annoying, actually, for a "real" fan, as I saw myself then. As for Cobain's death and its impact, at least here the MTV show, before the album release, had quite an impact. A friend got me a bootleg on cassette.

If we are all going to be honest with each other the answer is Nirvana. A legendary performance. Oasis' is more infamous for the antics. Never the music.

Obviously, you can level the playing field for this question in a more morbid fashion... but feck that. You are mis-remembering history. That Nirvana Unplugged was famous before he killed himself. Nirvana and Eric Clapton are the two most famous MTV Unplugged gigs. Both were monster hits on CD/DVD as well. I don't blame the record label for releasing the gig. All should hear it. An honest concert.

I'm not a fan of Nirvana but this gig was outstanding. It really felt like they'd 'unplugged' and stripped themselves bare to show off their talents. Absolutely love it.

Pretty much this- for my much younger self it was the album that stopped me dismissing Nirvana as Pixies wannabees or guys that had heard a bit of Sonic Youth and made me appreciate Kurt Cobain as a songwriter and a performer. As you say it was an outstanding performance.

The Oasis version has aged very badly. It's a shame that we missed out on perhaps an iconic performance from Liam that would have raised it a notch, but the Nirvana gig is timeless.

To be clear, I voted for Oasis Unplugged - if only for Bonehead's little chin raise during the start of the second pre-chorus bit of Cast No Shadow (go from 38:05)

Oasis unplugged is a great performance. Nobody can argue with that. But Nirvana's unplugged show is still one of the most legendary of rock, so I'm with that. And I don't even like Kurt Cobain that much!

Musically I'd say Oasis was light years ahead of Nirvana, but Kurt's vocals stole the show at unplugged, especially on Where did you sleep last night.
Ya.
Nirvana.

Honestly, although I do agree that Nirvana gave a good performance, and Where Did You Sleep Last Night is wonderful, I just never liked the songs that much, not being a Nirvana fan. That pushes the Oasis Unplugged in front for me IMO

Got to be Nirvana. Proper passion in his voice and they mixed it up with the covers, didn't play it safe and there's no Smells like teen spirit either.
Had Liam done the Oasis one & been on form, they could of released it properly and sold a lot!!

Oasis unplugged is a great performance. Nobody can argue with that. But Nirvana's unplugged show is still one of the most legendary of rock, so I'm with that. And I don't even like Kurt Cobain that much! I echo these sentiments. Those unplugged shows were really something back in the 90s. The generation like mine that grew up with that as well as actual music programming like Pop Up Video were such a treat.
