NME caters for young music fans; they have to keep looking interesting by exposing new bands that they "discovered" before every other music paper, & claim each of these new bands they put on the cover is "the future/saviour of rock'n'roll" or "what you've been waiting for".
There needs to be a quick turnover to maintain their young & hip image, so they need to show new flesh as often as possible because they wouldn't look cool if they admitted most new bands are crap & don't deserve to be on the cover nor even a full-page live report. Giving too much importance to already established bands would imply there's not much novelty worthwile, so no need to read a music paper every week.
There are a few exceptions for veterans they still display prominently on the front page, like Oasis, because they know any issue with Liam or Noel on the cover will grab many fans' attention, but their main line of work is clearly new/recent bands. Serious music fans read Mojo or possibly Q Magazine, not the NME which has to discover a new star every other week.
Hence NME's top 50 albums of the year, which must be in line with their editorial line, otherwise they'd admit they scammed their readers all year long by proclaiming the 1975 are the next big thing or giving so much coverage on the Courteneers recording a new album.

Blackstar is the album of the year imo. Blackstar, Lazarus, Dollar Days and Girl Loves Me are great tracks. The first 2 might be in Bowie's top 30(or close to it).
Radiohead released his best album since Amnesiac (Burn The Witch is one of my fav tracks of the year), "A Moon Shaped Pool" being the 2nd best album of 2016.

blossoms, david bowie, christine and the queens (wouldnt place that infront of blackstar though) are fairplay but theres a lot of questionable stuff and in questionable positions on that list.

Brian ranked the Placebo albums, and it's every bit as ridiculous as you'd imagine:
8: ‘Black Market Music’ (2000) 7: ‘Placebo’ (1996) 6: ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ (1998) 5: ‘Battle For The Sun’ (2009) 4: ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ (2003) 3: ‘Meds’ (2006) 2: ‘Loud Like Love’ (2013) 1: ‘MTV Unplugged’ (2015)

The one and only Laura Marling just announced a new album and released a belt of a tune. Some Radiohead vibes going on, eh? This is gonna be very interesting...

I always thought Silver Apples were a krautrock band but apparently they made music in the late 60s and came from the US. I guess that's what you'd call "ahead of their time".

Although there have been some serious losses to the music world in 2016, I think there have also been a lot of good albums this year (at least ones that appeal to me)
David Bowie - Blackstar (January) Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression (March) Travis - Everything at Once (April) Richard Ashcroft - These People (May) Red Hot chili Peppers - The Getaway (June) Neil Young - Earth (June) A Tribe Called Quest - Thanks for your Support (Nov) Neil Young - Peace Trail (Dec)
And there's Radiohead's new one too, though I can't recall when that came out.
